I went looking for a decent fender tube amp . tried the deluxe reverb and although it was excellent it wasnt as versatile as the champ because of the champs modeling tones.....although the effects/modelings are digital..I love the tweed and blackface settings...My only wish is that Fender makes Deluxe xd...i want those modeling tones with a little bit more gigin power..YooHoo Fender are you listening?

They make the Deluxe VM for Now. Don't see them having two digital Deluxes any time soon.

I have a Band-Master VM plugged into a Weber California Ceramic 15 and it's a great amp. I can't comment on the digital effects because I only use a small setting on the reverb for some shimmer.

I also have a DRRI, a Blues Jr NOS and a Jazzmaster Ultralight. Each one does something none of the others can manage, and so it is with the BM/VM. I bought it as the only way to get a Fender with a 15 without having to lug around a monster, and I must say I've been pleasantly surprised. The tone is very tweakable, and, while I can't get the bright Deluxe Reverb sound, well, guess why I have a Deluxe Reverb?

With my 335 and the Weber cab and speaker I get a warm, rich, round sound that a friend of mine thinks is the best I've ever managed (we've been playing together steadily since 1981, so he's listened to a lot of amps). It's fairly light, with not too much power that it's unusable in a living room, but you can still get loud with it. I rarely use the Clean channel -- it's a little bland sounding -- but the drive channel has a color that I really like.

It's a big target for the "it's not a REAL Fender" crowd, but a lot of us like to explore places that the conformists don't go. It is what it is, versatile, easy to dial in, and it has a lot of musically useful tones in it.

nice collection - and the 335 looks great!

Haven't tried out a VM, but may do a side-by side shootout next time I'm at my guitar guy's shop - he has the VM series along with the other Fenders - not that I need another Fender, but curious how it sounds compared to mine with the effects off.

Like the idea of a Weber California 15 - thought of doing that instead of the 2 California 12's.

My motivation was a) a really low price on the VM and b) I looked around and saw a 1-10, a couple of 1-12s, and a 2-12, and I thought "there's more to life than this!" So it was an inexpensive experiment that worked out nicely.

So much so, that I am contemplating finding another DRRI, and putting it in a 1-15 cab with the same speaker.

your right to get diff sounds use a diff amp...but I like the super champ because it can change its tones so dramatically with the dsp unit. 3 tweed settings, 3 black face, 3 hot rod deluxe, an acoustic, a jazz, 2 metal, and 3 british... Plus it has the digital reverb, tremelo, delay, vibratone and chorus!
For now I will explore using the Champs line out to another power amp and speaker enclosure to be able to get more power. I just wish they had put this dsp unit in the larger wattage amp(Deluxe VM). I would have bought it on the spot. :(

Yeah, I can indulge myself -- up to a point! I spent years when I couldn't afford much in the way of amps (and I foolishly resisted Fender, don't know why) but now I can pick and choose. And there's always my '63 Silvertone 1484 that I bought in '74 from the original owner for $40.

Well, it was 14 months ago that I started this topic and it has rambled all over the place, as most threads do. For closure, and FYI, I brought home a Super-Sonic 22 yesterday. I'm a little surprised at how soon it breaks up but otherwise it's a great, versatile little amp. Thanks to all. Time for a new topic...

DRRI hands down. It's a better built amp and sounds way better IMHO than any of the HRD or VM series amps. It is THE "Classic Fender Sound".

I couldn't agree more! In my opinion, LESS IS MORE. The tone alone of the DRRI puts the onboard "bells & whistles" of the HRD & VM amps in the rear view mirror (and barely visible).

DRRI = bare bones beauty at it's finest.

I recently a/b'd the DRRI / Deluxe VM / and a Pro-Tube "Twin~Amp" (discont. now) / PRRI / SS 22

the Deluxe VM is like the twin~amp's (not to be confused with a twin reverb) baby brother + effects
LESS BACKACHE ! I know because i have owned the pro tube twin~amp for about 7 yrs. now

the deluxe VM gives you GREAT clean channel and a dirty channel that is great for rockabilly, blues, some classic rock. I didn't really prefer the effects onboard much, but then I don't really use effects.

Although the DRRI was the winner for me, I hate lugging around a pedal board or pedals, and I wanted a clean and dirty channel. I almost went with the DRRI and just used my GUITAR VOL for clean to dirt. But jeez, when i went to 10 on guitar vol and the amp was already set on 8 for deep breakup, i was louder than what i needed to be for when i practiced at home ( and btw, LOUD!). So it was down to the deluxe VM. And yes, i a/b'd the Princeton as well, which gave me great great clean, BUT farted out really bad when i cranked it for rock seeing that i have humbuckers in my guitar. I think sometimes that if i was a tele guy, i prob would have gone with a PRRI. Anyways...
I then tried out the SS 22 and a/b that with the VM.
I took the SS 22 home. But i still liked the VM

I hear you, when I was shopping for an amp last year, I liked the DRRI best too. I really like to use mod effects (vibe, delay, phase) But I don't always want to lug around a pedal board either & I don't want to NEED an overdrive pedal. That's why I bought the Peavey Classic 50. I love the Classic, it's a great amp in many ways. I like the fact that I don't have to have an OD pedal to achieve overdrive at reasonable volumes. But, I have to admit, to my ears the DRRI is the best clean tone I've ever played through & heard. That's just my opinion, & there are many that share the same opinion on the DRRI. I'll probably still end up buying A DRRI eventually.

The bottom line though is this: You'll find some great advice on this forum from people with a lot of knowledge about Fender amps. Some of the things you'll be told are facts, some are opinions. But no matter what anyone on here tells you about what's best, it all comes down to you. What tone YOU like, what features YOU like, and what price YOU are willing to spend to get the things you want in an amp. Once YOU decide on those things for yourself, you'll find & buy the right amp.

Cheers~

Maybe a bit late to the party, but I recently bought a Deluxe VM and I really like it as a cool grab and go combo for everything from casual jams to medium sized gigs. While I have other superb sounding tube amps [Mesa/Boogie MKIIC+,Hayden Speakeasy,Dean Markley CD-30,etc...],my Deluxe VM occupies a solid place in my rather modest amp arsonal.
