I have a 1990 red knob Super 60. I just replaced the aging Sovtek 6L6s with new Groove Tubes 6L6s (normal rated)I got new from abroad.

Both 6L6s are hotter than I would expect. The outer one is very hot, making the amp cover near too hot to hold. Both are also glowing bright, the outer one really glowing - not the metal base but the 'filament'.

AKAIK the Super 60 does not have a bias control - and one has not been fitted post factory.

Is this a bias problem that a serviceman can fix, or could it be faulty GT tubes - I am trying to find out before I ship back the tubes or pay for a service ?

Take it to a tech. The bias is too high. They can replace resistor to change the bias.

Hi MC, I had a red-knobbed Super 60 for a year or so. It also did not have the bias control. The provision for a control is on the board, as you probably already know. If the tech is going into the bias section, I'd have a control circuit installed, if you plan to keep the amp. Art

Thanks (yes I intend to keep it - I have been playing it for 19ish years so far!)
