Lesk, I use Line 6 pod farm. I comes with a little external device. It has the DAC / ADC in it. This has a stereo mini output jack for headphones / avr / guitar amp connection, guitar input jack and a usb connection.

The software is easy to use, uses pictures of real equipment, amps/pedals/cabs etc. Click the ones you want to use, click on one of these and a picture of its knobs comes up, then turn the knobs to your heart's content.

At least with the bryston's (not sure about other brands probably the same )
To get higher power you bridge each stereo amp in to a mono, so if you want 5 channel sound you buy 5 power amps, and a preamp(s) that can handle the distribution.

Expensive, way beyond what I am willing to spend on a sound system anymore (audiophile used to be a hobby, then my hearing left :) )

hi aclempoppi!

am 55 myself! have been around music for quite a while. have had an electric (a strat) since i was 14, have a few strats today. can't say i paid any "professional musician" dues, i play because i have fun doing it (and only because i have fun doing it, life's too short otherwise), it don't earn my daily bread with music, barely a penny, so i do not know about the fears and trepidations pro musicians might have. i don't pay much attention to what the musical fashionistas declare to be the current fashion (like, who wears bell bottoms today?) so i kinda go down a path i have fun with, that probably irritates the fashionistas somewhat. the other thing i like doing is riding the tech wave, it's constant learning and that keeps me busy and enjoying myself. just not content with a "that's the way it's always been".

the one thing about tube amps is that we have gotten pretty used to the tone. you do get used to a comfort zone, nostalgia, and then you like to stick to it, anything threatening that can get a pretty rough reaction - perfectly understandable.

when it comes to guitar amps, i really like variety, expansive sound, multitudes of tones, i sure do not want to be talking about the merits of this tube over that tube and why the amp makes funny noises (usually when a tube is in its death throws). i happen to like computers and all the things they do, and whose capability keeps expanding on an almost daily basis. i dig networks - it connects people, equipment, everything, why not "guitar amps" too? i sure praise the guy who had a pair to suggest his laptop could be the next "amp" (actually tone maker + preamp, you still need (a) power amp(s) + speakers(s)). why not embrace a bit change and have some fun doing it?

does it mean you should dump tube amps? no, but be open to some paradigm shifts, see what happens.

ciao,
johnny.

Yeah, Johnny you're right about the comfort zone and nostalgia. Built a tube stand alone reverb unit last spring because I always liked their sound compared to the integrated reverbs. I'm not a computer savvy guy( my kids bugged me to get it two years ago), so I can't follow much of the language, abbreviations, and numbers that fly around. But that's OK, I can get to amp forums and find a ton of information about almost anything. Haven't seen my public librarian for some time though, better unplug this unit and go see if she still has a job. Hang in there Johnny, you seem to be on a good path. Art

I just had this dream about a Blue Cheer Tribute Band. Johnny S. was there, leaning back into a stack of 50 Cyber-Twins, duster and bell bottoms flapping forward, an evil grimace from the g-forces.
Man, I gotta stop hitting the nitrocellulose before bedtime.

I'm no expect but from following audio forums for a while I've learned a little.

People generally percieve louder sounds as higher quality wrt avr gear.
Multiple subs of differents sizes and located in different areas in a room will produce a smoother bass response, room nuls and sub peaks get cancelled out.
Higher frequencies coming from different areas in a room and possibly from different size drivers will interact in an unpredicable manner. The size, shape, room contents, surface materials. location of the speakers will all impact the sound. For an audio buff this will be unwanted noise, for a guitarist maybe some nice distortion.
So multiple guitar amps in a room might be a great idea, smoother bass, louder and maybe some more distortion in the higher frequencies.

Mutliple amps/speakers in a avr system will benefit as above for guitar amp but I beleive is mostly for positional impact. Very high end audio gear is only in stereo. The idea is two speakers are enough to give the sensation of the band being on a stage, in your living room, in front of you with the musicians spread out on the stage. Our ears tell our brain that's what is happening.

With surround, you may feel you are sitting with the band. Or with a well mixed live performance the rear and side speakers will reproduce audience sounds and maybe reflections of the music off the walls and ceiling. You should get the sensation of being in the audience at a live concert.

Stereo and even more so with surround depends on how the engineer did the final mix. And it starts with how the performance in miked in the first place. Digital processing makes it affordable.
