Hello all,

I'm in need of a new amp. I've been looking at the blues junior and Super champ XD.

I play at home mainly (so something small and sounds good at low volumes is a plus) and I like to play the following;

Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Alice in chains
Hendrix
Red hot Chili peppers
Godsmack
Guns and Roses
ShineDown

I have a Digitech RP250 effects pedal.

Which of these amps will get me what I'm looking? Maybe I should look for a different amp? My budget is $500 at the high end. And I would perfer a tube amp.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

I've heard good things on this forum from people that own the Super Champ xd, so I'd go with it myself. Since most of your playing is at home and it can be played with a mic if needed.

If you can wait and save a few hundred I've also heard good things about the Egnater Rebel 20!!

I own a SCXD that I think is great. I can get some pretty heavy sounds. But I don't know how well it would be for Shinedown or Godsmack. I guess with the right effects pedal it might be ok. But for that price range you might be better off with something like a Peavy Valveking . They might be a little more well suited for the newer type metal.

However it does do an awesome job for Sabbath, Priest, GnR, Peppers, Hendrix and Alice in Chains. I've never played a Blues Jr., but I'm guessing you might better off with the scxd. Its not a "true tube amp", but it sounds like one.

Your best bet is to probably compare them side by side. Good luck.

OK I'll through the Blackstar HT-5 in the mix.

It seem to be more of a metal type amp.

I want the best of both worlds heavy metal and great clean Fender tones.

If I can get the heavy tones from pedals with the Fender, then thats good enough for me.

Yeah, Blackstar is an incredibly versitile amp, but can be still be abit pricy.

Look at anything Egnator and Marshall (Probably the MA series)

The Blackstar does seem pretty interesting. I'm thinking it would be ideal for heavier types of music. I heard some demos on youtube as well and was impressed. However it is only 5 watts. That would probably more than enough at home. But how well would it hold up if you ever did play in a band? I'm not sure.

The SCXD does have a "metal voice" on the dial that you might like. I personally like to use a distortion pedal instead. I have a Boss MT-2 that sounds pretty good. Keep in mind that I'm playing through a 1x12 cab as well. So that helps with the lows. But I can get a pretty heavy Metallica sound. At the same time I do enjoy that nice Fender clean channel as well.

Next weekend will be the first time I'm using this amp while playing with a drummer. Something I really thought I'd be doing when I bought this amp. So we'll see how it goes. I've see posts on this sight saying that the scxd holds up pretty well with a drummer.

I'd say its worth checking out. Egnator seems to be getting some pretty good reviews on this sight as well. The Marshall tube amps just seem a bit pricy.

The Egnater can go from clean to Metal. Look on youtube there's lots of samples, or just go to Egnaters site for samples and amp reviews. It's a great amp. One of the best sounding and versatile amps I've owned in years.

For the price i agree, but if price isnt the limit i still insist that Diezel or Soldano Or Rivera is the way forward.
