Hi There,

Just wanted to ask for peoples opinions on connceting a compressor and distortion pedal to my Princeton Recording Amp, which is a really cool amp by the way.

I have my own Compressor (Diamond) and a Keeley Modded RAT, and want to use these rather than the in built compressor and distortion.

The amp has an effects loop and I currently go like this.

Guitar-Tuner-Noise Supressor (in) Noise Suppressor (send to )-Diamond Compressor-RAT.

The RAT goes back to the return jack of the Noise Supressor.

I then run a cable out of the Output of the Noise Supressor into the input of the amp.

Should I actually be going through the amps effects loop?

And if so how would you connect it all up?

Just be interesting to get some opinions.

Ta
Scott

Alright... I will opine.

First, I like the Compressor and Gate onboard, and I even like the onboard distortion, too. Nothing wrong with it at all, especially if you take the time to "discover" all the different tones you can get from tweaking.

I am sure it is not like the Rat at all.

My question to you is: Do you like the way it sounds and feels the way you have it?

How you place items in your signal chain makes big differences. Put a chorus or compressor post EQ, now reverse them, etc... If you compress a chorus, it seems to intensify the effect as opposed to chorussing a compressed tone, yaddaya etc.

If you place the Rat in the Effects Loop, you will not gain the benefit of overdriving your preamp tube with it. The effects loop is POST PREAMP right before the Output section.

I find that effects loops are great for using things like delays and such that usually end up "last on the chain". It also works well for a psuedo-boost channel especially since the effects loop can be truly bypassed. On the new Twin amp, the effects loop has a separate volume control..cool.

If you delay a distorted signal, it works well. If you distort a delayed signal.. it usually ends up sounding brittle and harsh.

I also might opt to place the noise gate last in the off-board effects that you are using. You might find that the Ratt (or whatever you choose to use after the gate) makes more noise than allowable and since it is post gate, the gate will not close the pathway. Maybe not.

My question again... Have you tried the different gear placement? Mix and play "toaster" and see what works. Hey, the more unconventional things get, the more you might discover a new tone or way of doing things. Isn't that what Hendrix and Page did? Some of these "classic tones" were, and still are garbage sounding, but highly desireable due to their popularity.

A classic rock guitar tone attitude:
Take a garbage-tone and work it, baby. Work it into a groove.
If it becomes a hit, many will desire the tone.
How silly. I love it.

nice reply greg,

of course it's a matter of experimenting, i've been doing a lot of it, and shouldn't really ask such daft questions, when i'm a big boy and can figure it out for myself!

i've never had an amp with an effects loop, so always used to chain up the pedals and go straight into the amp.

i've just changed all the tubes bar the power tubes (that's another story as to why not the power tubes-how long have you got?), to JJ's and it sounds ace.

i've found some great tones just with the amp, and my diamond compressor. the RAT is bust, so i've sent it back to Keeley who are repairing it for free. Great service.

I've just ordered one of the new Jekyll & Hydes too, purely because I'm sad enough to think that if it's good enough for The Strokes it's good enough for me....THat's the tone I'm looking at, along with Kings Of Leon, and my all time fav, Johnny Marr for the cleaner tones.

CHeers Again,
Scott

Scott,

+1 on Greg's comments. He was helpful with me on another forum on the PRA. I owned the PRA for a 30 day trial, overall liked it tons, but ended up with a Bassman... . But one thing I loved on the PRA was the footswitch and the effects loop. Overall, it is a great amp.... lots of balls and very diverse, and takes pedals very well. I would love to own one, but I just love the overall tone of the Bassman better and cannot afford both. But, as Greg suggests, just experiment... you have lots of great options with that amp.

enjoy.
