Can the CyberTwin SE be damaged if I am using the effects loop instead of the instrument input?

I have a rather weird setup right now. I've been experimenting with Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 4, and I like the sounds it has. I've been using its outputs going into the L/R effects loop input of the CyberTwin, and it sounds good. But, if I use the effects loop output into the little USB guitar interface, back out to the effects loop returns, it's difficult to get the levels right. Going straight from the interface into the effects return sounds right on.

Just wondering if I'll burn something up using PURELY the effects loop return.

TIA

EXAMPLE / EXPLANATION:
1. Guitar into CyberTwin

2. CyberTwin Effects Loop Output to USB Interface...

3. USB Interface to Guitar Rig 4 software

4. Back to CyberTwin's Stereo Effects Loop Return

edit: also, in this instance I am unsure whether to place the effects loop switch to -10dBv or +4dBu. Suggestions, please?

according to the SE manual, -10dBv for foot pedals, +4dBu for rack mounted effects. a swing of 14dB is a tiny bit more than a factor of 20.

see page 1 of the analog I/O PCB, cyber twin SE schematics. The switch is nothing more than switch a resistor across the signal to ground to attenuate the signal (see the schematic). suggest you try what fender says, seems you have "rack mounted" equipment. begin with volume set to zero and slow lift off. if you saturate by level 2 or 3 out of 10, you need to attentuate, if weak signal by 10 of 10, need to do opposite.

good luck! & happy new year!

To clarify, will it hurt to run the power amp section (from the effects loop forward) without having a load going into the preamp/tuner/input section?

Guitar -> USB interface -> Effects Loop Return (nothing in CyberTwin instrument input)

i never tried that. But if i did, i would use same recipe, start with zeroed volume and increase slowly.

i do not believe anything will get, at least not looking at the schematics. please note you will skip all the tone shaping circuits by feeding into the effects loop. i have no idea what that will sound like.

good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I feel better "pluggin in" through the effects loop now, since you consulted the schematic. That's what I was hoping to hear.

But it sounds really good! It really brings to light the "are tube amps on the way out to pasture" thread. If you can spare the $99 for a Line 6 Pod Studio GX, get the required stereo mini headphone jack and whatever components you need to jack into the effects return (Radio Shack is awesome), and download the demo of Guitar Rig 4 - or better yet, try the demo of Amplitube Fender edition. They're really cpu intensive programs, but if your computer has the horsepower, you can set the sampling rates up to 96kHz, 24-bit processing, with next to no latency (~11ms) and the sound is niiiice.

I'm not condoning turning the CyberTwin into a high priced power amp, but it's nice to have alternatives. Plus, it's a reaally nice power amp :)

ps: the compressor, tape echo, and "wah" used in Amplitube Fender is based on the CyberTwin design ;)
