It played fine in the store (a number of times over the last few weeks), but got it home today and I get a sizzling/crackling noise as chords ring out with the amp cranked (using my Tele). Plenty of time to return it, but if it's just the tubes, I'll obviously just swap in new ones.

Anyone with more expertise have an opinion/some advice?

Hey man, myself and forum member binterz (my best friend) both got one the same day a few months back.

I swapped out my tubes for a JJ power tube and a Mesa 12ax7 at first and with it breaking up earlier the crackling was worse. Bear in mind, to keep the costs down the tubes are rotten. Ours came with an EHX 6V6 and a non branded Chinese 12ax7. The EHX power tube is not a patch on their pre-amp tubes.

I then stuck an EHX 12ax7 in the pre alongside the JJ instead and it sounds absolutely lovely.

Both of us guys NEVER play it cranked however, we write our songs together for our band with it at 12 O'Clock always. It seems that beyond that the crackling gets worse.

At that setting we get a lovely clean and binterz runs a Marshall Guv'Nor Plus through his and I run a BOSS FDR-1 just to give us EQ options and distortion or gain.

Whats yours sound like at half way up? Have you tried a pedal?

For what these amps are they are great for the price but I really dont think they can handle a higher setting without going from what I would say is 'wet' to 'dusty'.

CC

Halfway up is fairly clean and seems to be crackle free. It's the overdriven sound of just the amp I wanted to make use of for recording, however. So you see my dilemma...

Yup I do bro, they simply dont break up that well over that setting. Run a Tubescreamer or something through it. Otherwise it's a no-go.

Thanks for the info. I have decided it just isn't the amp I am looking for, then.
