That depend on if you're using the amp at home or on stage. SS is NOT for the guy who sits at home playing for himself. SS is an amp for musicians who will gig at least a couple of time per month. I'm sure one can find a lot of amps that will sound better in a shop or at home. The SS has too much output for that and will be hard to handle. Use it on stage!!

CC, I have been playing for 38 years. I have different amps for different voicings as I am certain others do here as well. I find my Super Sonic (combo) to be a great gigging amp. It can pull of the Bassman very well. I use it for my single coil guitars and the Vibrolux setting for some humbuckers. The drive section is quite musical to me. Quite the tone/drive pallete combination. You will need to spend some time with it.

As for reliability, I have had no issues other than the tube for reverb driver.

Regards,
D

Conclusion then; for those guys who sits home, buy a 15 - 25 watts amp and you'll be lucky. For those of you who play in a bigger living room = stage and audience, the SS is a good companion.

I play country and bought the amp for the mix between bassman/vibrolux but find myself today playing 95% the bassman channel.

Nobody's mentioned the send/return with separate volumes. This is a feature well worth mentioning. That's the place to put your EQ.

Seems like its the Supersonic for me. Also seems like most people just use the Bassman side of things.

The bassman channel is actually quite nice. Gives lots of depth

Yepp, you'll end up there. Don't forget the possibility to put a patch cable from send to return and create the "solo button".

Good luck with your amp.

If you're a pro touring axeman... you're probably gonna love it.

I gig weekly with mine... and while volume-wise it CAN be a little much for my Sunday morning environment (church worship band... but not your typical church)... the THD hotplate works nicely to tame it down just enough. I've heard some guys say that the SS doesn't attenuate well, but I'd beg to differ. Possibly since mine has more hours on it and is more broken in... I'm not sure.

I'm running my 112 combo head through the 212 extension cabinet (only... in place of the combo speaker) right now and I like the punch that I get from the burn channel.
I wanted a rig that I could gig with during the week/weekend (the 112 combo) and bring back to Church on Sunday and do that gig as well... This thing really can cover all of those sonic bases...

I agree that the bassman is VERY close to the original in terms of tone...I know this because my lead guitarist plays through a '66 Bassman... and it is literally 2 feet from my amp at all times. With the same guitars, we can dial up nearly identical tones when I'm running the sealed 212 cab.

I also agree that the Vibro channel is much nicer with a humbucker and it twinkles and sparkles just like any Fender clean. and it TOO sounds better to my ears through the sealed cab versus the combo.

It's probably not the best "basement" amp... but it's not part of the "Pro Tube" series for no reason...
Seriously, how many guys would spend nearly 2 grand on a combo/extension cab to play around in their basements? I'm sure some, but probably a very small minority.

Oh, and the effects loop... excellent.
I run a TC electronic G-system through my SS using the loop and the tone is incredible...
But yes, you really need to push that gain to at least 3 to start getting REAL Fender tube tone...

And don't forget that you can (and probably should) consider a tube upgrade to your preamp tubes if you REALLY want to bring that puppy to life.

I've got a couple of Jan-Philips 5751's and a Mullard 12ax7 coming... I'll be doing some "experimenting" when they arrive, but it sounds like I'll be pleasantly surprised based on feedback from other members.

Tell me more about changing tubes. Which ones should one change, why and to what? What's the result?

Bought me a B-bender during x-mas. Funny little instrument.

Well, I'm certainly no expert on the Tube issue, but do a search of the "modern amp forum and you'll find some good info.

I've just heard good things about the 5751 for taming some of the harshness of a fender tube amp when it gets in the break up range...

The mullards are just historically more 'musical" than the JJ's or stock tubes...

Again, just search super sonic and tubes or mods, etc. You'll find guys with much more experience than I. In fact, this is my first full tube amp since the late 80's.. so I have a bit of a learning curve as well. But I did IMMEDIATELY remember what I loved so much about playing through "real" amps back then.

I spent so many years as a Bass player and a lead singer/rhythm guitarist (on acoustic primarily) that I just forgot what it was like to play electric through a good tube amp.

BUT, tube upgrades have always been a VERY good way to sweeten, fatten, warm up, (use your ambiguous word of choice here) an amp.

I live next door to the mullard plant :D

But na, each tube brand gives different flavours. If your confused, look here:

http://www.watfordvalves.com/reports.asp

I found this helpful for finding the exact tubes for the sound i wanted when i was retubing my twin.

I want a head to replace carting my DeVille around and the reason I dont want a bassman head is cos professionally I dont want to either rely on a vintage or run the risk of a vintage being stolen plus the distortion channel is a big plus for what I do.

If they sold a RI of a 63 bassman head i would snatch that up in an instant. It is a different sound than a 59 bassman. The closest thing you can get is the Gomez "El Sondito" but they recently stopped making them. ( i really want one by the way. It is a PTP wired clone of the 63 bassman head)
