Could I get people's opinions on the Super Sonic, especially the head, if anyone has any?

I really want a Fender head because carrying my DeVille and renting Twins is breaking my back. From all I have seen demo wise and review wise it seems wonderfully versatile.

I would like to hear my Fender alumni thoughts though,

Thank you,

CC

Hey, i couldnt tell you about the heads, but the combo's ive used quite alot.

The combo's at first dont seem good. But its grown on me quite alot, the cleans are alright but the gain channel leaves something to be desired.

For ultimate portability get on of these bad boys:

Image

Apparently they are actually GREAT for tone, especially if you already have a good pedalboard. And get yourself a pretty decent cab and your sorted

Absolutely loved my SS.

I think if your looking for a modern overdrive it is the best thing Fender has to offer.

Cleans are nice, it was just too much amp for my needs and so I'm into the 65 deluxe reverb now.

The cascaiding gain feature is so cool on the SS and you can nail SRV tones with it (see the texas settings on the card that comes with the amo).

I would buy another one if I was gigging right now, it has all the power you would ever need and great tones too.

ya gotta plug in before you buy any amp, its the only way you will know if it fits

I will def try before I buy but yeah, I'm looking for more modern gain from a Fender as I adore Fender cleans no matter the flavour.

Another question is how convincing is the Bassman voice compared to an actual 60's Blackface head?

I have the combo version and the Bassman setting on about 4 with the treble at 3 and bass at 3 is the greatest overdriven sound ive ever heard. Ive only played a 63 bassman once and i get the exact same feel from it. I didnt have them right next to each other, but im convinced. Unless it was sat right next to a 60s bassman and A/B im not sure you could tell the difference.

think about when you go to buy a tv, you buy a great Panasonic or something, it looks not as good when its sitting next to the billion inch super high def sony or something next to it. But when you get it home, it will look fantastic because its a great tv.

im sure if you sat a SuperSonic nnext to a real bassman you could hear a difference. That almost goes without saying, but this is a very good bassman like sound. It sounds JUST like it to me, but im sure others will differ.

I ran a blond oxblood SS head for a while.
I liked the crunch channel a LOT better than the Marshall TSL I had and found it to be reliable.
I also had a Prosonic and liked the prosonic better . I sold the SS I had and bought a one off 100 watt Prosonic head that Zinky handbuilt with Verb from Brad Whitford.
I still sometimes think about snagging another SS though as there are somethings I REALLY love about those amps. For example jump the effects loop and then dial up the gain on the loop and wa-la you suddenly have a footswitchable lead boost in your head!! That was COOL!!

Sounds very sweet. I've never attempted a jump with an amp.

I'm really considering saving for one of these. I'm also GASin a 52 Tele but I NEED the amp more as carrying my DeVille is just gettin too much when I'm drunk at 3 in the morn. I'll end up injured.

p.s. I love Brad Whitford's playing!

Thanks for the replies guys, keep em comin!

The jump is simple just run a short patch cable into both sides of the effects loop. The loop on these amps is adjustable on both the pre and post gain in the rear + engaging the loop adds an extra 12AX in the circuit. Set it up right it adds a touch more gain + gives a nice volume boost whenever you hit the switch. For a lead player like myself it's great to have that extra solo boost available at the foot switch!!
All the tones were solid on these amps. The cleans nice and glassy and the crunches were nice once you dumped the crappy harsh noisy and thin sounding Sovetec pre amp tubes.
here is a clip running the SS head for the solo

Same tune Prosonic solo

I had my SS combo since 2006, the more I played it, the more I smiled and that is still the case today. It is worth buying just for the Bassman channel alone. However in my case, I have been playing the vibrolux a lot more cause i like the glassy blackface tone with reverb better. A great addition to my SS has been the MXR 6 band EQ, I use it to boost frequencies when playing live or at home, to lower the overall volume becasue at 60 watts tube amp, the SS is quite a beast !

For whatever it's worth, I played a SS combo at GC several times before I finally decided it was way too much power for me. At that, I loved the sound and versatility of the combo. It wasn't too heavy, not too expensive, sounded like a million bucks, but it was far too loud to play at home, which is primarily what I do. I loved the vibrolux and bassman channels, which really makes the amp versatile. The icing on the cake was the drive section which can sound like anything from slight overdrive to extremely distorted, might I say even a hi gain amp (?). This could save a guy from having to buy several pedals. It's got great reverb built in and an effects loop that can be used as a boost. The only reason I don't have one is that I need an amp I can play at home. Also, I really like the tremolo on the BF amps.

Bought mine in august. I miss the prescence button and the bright input. But I bought an MXR EQ to get the bright glassy sound. The rest of the amp is so good.

Ok, I'm seeing alot of love for the SS but I'm going to chime in here with a different opinion.

First off, I DO NOT recommend buying this amp unless you have a chance to plug one in FIRST. I too saw the Youtube demos and thought, "hey, now that's a cool amp!" This was until I spotted a combo at my local shop one day and decided to try it for myself. I absolutely HATED it. Well, maybe that's a little strong, but for this amp's price tag I was expecting way more. The Vibrolux channel is brittle and biting. The Bassman channel seemed the most usable, but didn't sound great at reasonable volumes. The dirt channel I'm sure could get a decent tone but be prepared to sit there and have to dial it in for a while. This is just the thing though - it was only decent at best, and for it's price point it should not sound just "decent". I've heard better tone out of amps half it's price.

Another note in my tale is that when I asked to try it out, the clerk - who's known me for years - said, "Actually, I'd like to hear what you think about this thing." Afterward, I told him what I typed here and he nodded and agreed. He revealed that they've had that SS sitting on their sales floor for a very long time. They get people who call asking if they have it in stock because they've seen the demos and then they come in to try it and end up not wanting it. Also told me they've made four sales of the SS but for only two amps. TWICE they've sold one and then gotten it returned because the owner changed their mind after spending some time with it. So they've only sold two since it was released, and gotten them both back at least once each.

So, don't order it from the internet before you've had a chance to hear it in person. Maybe you'll like it, but I sure as hell didn't.
