I've had a HRDx for about a year. Don't use it often because it's to darn loud for church. However, I still mess around with it at home.

My question is, are there tubes out there that would give me more clean headroom, and what should they be biased at?

I had to replace the tubes when I first got it due to a defect - the amp lasted about 2 hours after I first brougt it home from the store - and, I think the technician that fixed it for me made the amp even hotter with new tubes and re-biaising it.

I want clean headroom, that can take pedals. Any suggestions? And, don't say a new amp...lol!

Thansk - Merry Christmas!

Hey, if you have a look at most other posts about any HOT ROD series amps, you'll notice they are a tad unreliable... But they do sound good.

As for the tubes, im afraid they vary with the type of tube make. However i can think that if you replace the 6L6 power valves with a large bodied valve like a KT66 or a KT88 they wont break up as quick.

The preamp valves too but im not sure what to advise you on there... someone will jump in soon im sure and finish this.

Check www.eurotubes.com for some JJ's. Bob has full retube kits for different purposes such as headroom, high gain, blues options etc. You won't get a ton of clean headroom out of a HRDlx. They were designed that way. If you want clean, a solid state amp would fit the bill and be cheap too. If you want less gain, you can use NOS JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tubes. Not sure if the KT66 or KT88 will work. They're pretty big bottles. You can use 5881 power tubes, they'll last forever but the new production 5881 IMHO sound like crap.

Twins are the cleanest amps around, but way too loud for your purpose.
