I just bought a new Blues Junior Tweed a few days ago and I plugged it in for the first time today and after about 5 minutes of playing I noticed a slight burning smokey smell with little bit of haze that only lasted a few minutes. The amp still sounded great and there was no crackling or anything like that. Is it normal for a new tube amp to do this the first time you plug it in and play?

Thanks

Could have been from dust buildup on the tubes. It didn't smell electrical, I'm assuming, so I would suspect that is all it is.

Not on a new amp. I doubt there was dust on the tubes. I'd keep an eye on it.
I've been playing tube amps for 40 years and never had dust burn off a new or even a old used amp. I have some pretty dust amps too. :D

A smokey smell-a haze? Absolutely unacceptable!!! No this is not a normal operating condition for an amp. It should be returned for another amp. There is no telling what overheated to the point of smoking. As a buyer, you have a reasonable expectation of receiving an operational piece of equipment that performs according to it's sales discription. I doubt that you ordered a smokey amp. Art

My Lacquered tweed did the same thing, I think it's the glue used. Several of my Fender amps did the same thing, set it outside and let it cook for a few hours. It does stink!!!

You should swap your too. :D

No, they shouldn't smoke, burn or stink. If they did, don't you think Fender would say it would in the manual and say it was normal? They glue tolex too. Tweed covering has been used forever and I never heard of amps smoking or smelling. I still get another one just in case.

On a brand new Texas Red blues jr the EL84 tubes run 400*, The 3 12ax7 tubes are around 140* and the back pannel is about 3/4" away fron the output tubes.
The output tubes on a Princeton Reverb Amp run around 230* and the 12ax7s are 80* , the back pannel is 2" inches away from the tubes.
My Tweed Blues Jr runs about the same temp as the Texas Red, but it is 3 months older....nd no smell .. Also take the Groove Tube sticker off the EL84's

Not normal in most cases, I'd be packing it back to the store.

Unless it had some protective coverings on the tubes (not the tube damper pad that should be there) that should have been removed before using, though I have not seen that on tubes in a fender amp.

Yes 400*.. Billm says the bias level is to high. With his bias mod It runs cooler than BJr's tube-roasting level.

EUROTUBES Says:
1. Blues and Pro Jr amps:

These are great little amps with a warm juicy tone right out of the box and the main reason for this is the bias is nice and hot. In fact with just a moderate grade on the EL84's they will usually clock in at between 85 to 95% of max dissipation
YES they do run HOT!!!

My Egnater Rebel runs both El84 AND 6V6's at the same time and they don't get that hot.

Tubes get hot period. I don't think the external temp of an EL84 hits 400 degrees.

I looked everywhere I could think of and nobody, including Billm, mentions any temp over 250 for any tubes. Hell, you could bake a pie at 400. At least the amp would smell good with a hot apple pie cooking in there.
