to the OP - that's my mod, located at:

http://www.fenderforum.com/userphotos/index.html?recid=48201

and here is a page that features a pic of it:

IMO it's easier to do than the bright cap mod and brings way more versatility to the amp. Hope you enjoy it. At FDP I've also posted some power supply stiffening, standby switch buffering, 6L6 conversions and other things for the 65 DRRI. Love mine !

Excellent how-to for discharging the caps Fritz. Thanks for that.

Thanks alot Fritz! This mod works great! I made a compilation of a bunch of your mods and saved it on my computer. I then poured over them for several days trying to decide what I should do. In the end I think I chose the correct one. My wife thought I was crazy when she saw me with the soldering iron to my "perfectly good" amp. Thanks again! I may try something else in the future.

Hi Fritz, does this cap discharge method drain the power amp caps? Art

Yes, it does.

Here's the thing. The primary caps are in what's called a totem pole stack, with voltage controlling resistors in parallel to the caps, and across the voltage rail to ground. If the amp is unplugged with the standby and power in the on position and left for overnight, the caps will drain through the resistors.

Still, it pays to follow a discharge check.

Hey Hollis P I use my route 66 to get a great vintage rock sound on the DRRI but it adds so much stinking noise !!!!

I would love to get a pedal that would give me singing sustain with a little bite, without all the added hiss and such.

Why can't I have my DRRI tone and 80's hair band distortion at the same time.

I'll admit I am not a pedal guy and have never really liked them or looked into them enough to know what will take me where I want to go.

Bump :)

I didn't see a difinitive answer to the OP's question about the possibility of long-term damage to the DRRI as a result of the Fritz mod. Any thoughts? Updates on the state of your DRRI, Hollis, Fritz, or anyone else who has performed this mod? Everything still AOK?

It's a reversible mod, too, right?

I'm thinking about having a tech do this for me, but I'm obviously hesitant about changing something on a "perfectly good amp," especially an expensive perfectly good amp.

Thanks.

I have noticed a hum on my DRRI recently. And, when the volume is all the way down, I can still hear my guitar through the amp. Something is not right with it. I don't think it's the mod though. What I did to it shouldn't be causing the problems I'm having. By the way, the mod still works great. The problem started about a month after I performed the mod. I also went back over my solder joints, just to make sure. I've changed all the tubes except for the rectifier tube. I'll change that one next. The mod works great though. I couldn't be more happier with my amp. The Normal channel sounds better than the Vibrato channel IMO, and now with reverb, it's perfect.

I have quite a few amps out there like this, done by myself and many of the FDP guys have done them, too. No reports of long term wear or tear due to it, nor would I expect there to be. It puts no stress stress on power bearing parts of the amp, just re-routes the signal a bit.

I've seen quite a few DRRI's lately and they all hum or hiss or something. Also, my friend's TRRI does it too, and another friend has an original '65 Deluxe Reverb and it makes all kinds of noise. Now, let me be clear, the noise is very minimal, and it has probably done this since I bought it brand new. Most amps do make some kind of little noises. I love the Fritz mod, it still works great, and I wouldn't want my amp any other way!
