Can you put a volume box right before a speaker. By that I mean can you connect the speaker jack to a volume box and then connect the box to the speaker input jack?

Put it in the effects loop if you have one or just use a volume pedal in the loop. The wattage is too high at the speaker jack. You need an attenuator not just a volume control. Are you using a Hot Rod series amp?

I use a volume box in the effects loop of my Hot Rod Deluxe but I was wondering what can be done with an amp without an effects loop like a Twin or Super Reverb.

You need an attenuator that can handle the wattage. Look at Weber, Dr. Z or THD.
