Hello everyone. I am beginning the search for a new amplifier. I haven't really narrowed anything down to specifics but just by browsing I came across the Hot Rod Deluxe, and it seems nice. I am just looking to get some firsthand accounts of what this amp is like.

Well gpmoschella, that question certainly is a can of worms...
Here my attempt to maybe stop a war before it gets started.

You need to search this topic and read all of them... You will find a bunch of folks really like them and hang their hat on "em, and there are a bunch of folks that wish they never even heard of them. It is a forum divided :D

All I can recommend is that you read the Harmony Central reviews, and others. Go check out as many Amps as you can before you make up your own mind.
Good Luck

Bill

I have two of them. I love the sound , Some say the over drive sounds bad but mine sound good to me. Its very much the fender OD sound . Some say they brake down alot. Mine have been really good. I have a VOX amp that brakes down alot,Not the fenders. I would change the tubes to JJ brand in all spots. I would and do blow a small fan into the back of it to keep it cool as I do with all my tube amps exsept for the heads. A good amp for the money. I really like my peavey classic 30 as a plan B. They are tuff stuff. But they dont have the fender sound I like. Thats not to say they sound bad. They sound wonderfull in their own way. You might try a Blues JR. Ive had mine for a while and really like it . I am useing it in small places more and more. Good luck.

I used to own a hotrod and currently own a blues deluxe and a blues jr.Both have their pluses .The jr because of its weight and the deluxe has descent tone, but recently I bought a Deluxe Reverb and couldnt be happier.I dont know what your budget is, but I paid 110 dollars more for the Deluxe reverb than the Blues Deluxe. If I play them next to each other, the Blues deluxe sounds like a toy.The tone in the deluxe reverb is outstanding and the reliability of the DRRI is way better.

To Bill:
I have been reading reviews on other websites and getting mixed feedback (as with anything)
So I though I'd bring the subject to these forums
I'm not looking for the question to be answered 100%, but there is no fender dealer near where I live that has amps nicer than a Frontman, and I want to have an idea of what I will be looking at when I drive a few hours to play on some amps.

Well, for the money they are ok.They sound good , but have some reliability issues. And the volume knob is touchy , it goes from quiet to overpowering with hardly a twitch. You dont mention what type of music you play or what you are gonna use it for.Are you gigging with it or using it for home use?Very important questions.

If you gig on a serious basis or rely on it to make a living, then NO, you can do a lot better for the money. Nuff said. Do a search.

Get a used DRRI for the same money.

You may also want to have a look at the Egnater line of amps ...

I think that some of them are terrible and some of them are good. Its all to do with the, "Luck of the draw" with those amps.

For a valve amp around the same price, its worth having a look at Peavey, Egnator, or some of the other fenders. The deluxe reverb is very simular but its handwired and its got no gain. Get a overdrive/distortion pedal for one and your on to a win.

That's what I dumped my HRDlx for and I couldn't be happier. It's one of the best amps I've owned in a long, long time.

If you look at the difference between the hotrod and the drri pricewise its only less than 200 bucks ,but a million miles difference in tone and reliability.I ended up paying 810 for a brand new drri.Look around at the deals, they are out there.

Thats true Budglo, I usually play classic rock, or just jam to anything from blues to metal. I only plan on using it for practice or maybe some small playing with a few friends but I wouldn't plan on using it for anything like a gig.
