I have a new DRRI and really like it When I'm finished playing I first put the amp in standby mode before powering down the amp. I get a loud pop when moving the standby switch from on to the standby position. I thought the switch eliminated that - at least the one's I've tried before didn't do that. Is there something wrong?

Hi CK, that is unusual, it's normally the other way around. The "thump" comes when the standby switch allows the full inrush of current to the caps, tubes, output transformer, and in some amps even the bias circuit. Not sure what is causing the noise, unless the switch is faulty and is arcing. How does it sound when you switch from standby to play mode? As far as powering down in standby, I have never found any authoritative information advising this procedure in tube equipment. The only information on this subject, suggested returning the equipment to room temperature as soon as possible and covering it if moving into a winter enviornment. Art

My guess is a defective switch. I would have it checked out by a local tech before it gets any worse or causes further damage.

Good luck!
