Hey

I resently changed some tubes in my Hot Rod Deville, from groove tubes rated 4 to a set of Groove tubes rated 7 both sets were matched.. What i noticed was the first set when biased to 60 the dial was at almost 2 oclock and the second set was the complete opposite at 11 oclock.. is that normal ?? They are almost the same tube set
Cheers
Mike

Sure. Groove Tubes uses different manufacturers and match them, they don't make tubes. Tubes will pretty much bias differently. Why bias so cold @ 60mv?

I was told that 60mv was the suggested setting on that amp i guess to make those tubes last,i cooked the last set the labels went from white to almost chocolate brown and was disappointed that i only got about three months out of a 80 dollar set.. what setting do you suggest for the hot rod deville?
Cheers
Mike

I would go at least 68mv. Funny thing is in my HRDlx I ran a set of JJ's at around 82mv and ran them like that for well over a year until I sold the amp for other reasons. I never had any luck with GT's and they're sort of overpriced for what you get IMO. You can retube the whole amp with JJ's for a bit less.

G Take a look here, Bob has biasing videos and all kinds of retube options.
I used Blues Option #1 and it really sounded great.

IRIC, they had bought GE's old machinery and line for their 6L6's, so I do believe they make some of their tubes.

I have JJ's in my HRDeVille 410 and biased at 86mv, sounds great!

They bought the line, but never manufactured due to EPA laws in California. Just what I read somewhere though. That's why tube manufacturing moved to Europe. No EPA. Most of my musical associates consider GT pure BS.
Fender owns them, that's why they're in their amps. That's why GT's are recommended replacements.

I'm the wrong guy to ask about HRD series amps because I had nothing but trouble with mine from the time it was a couple months old. YMMV
I'm a real happy Egnater owner now.

So

Those jj tubes are almost half price compared to the groove tubes but they are both Russian? is that correct and why can the JJ's take more mv's than the Groove Tubes.. I could tube both my blues deville and HR for the price i paid for the 5 groove tubes..damm

Mike,
Yep, unfortunately you paid for the hype. Sorry man. JJ's has a really sweet sounding EL84 too. My Egnater uses both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes.

JJ's are the way to go. 63supro is right, Groove Tubes are all hype. They sound rotten and the highs are ear splitting in most amps, stinkin.

JJ's all the way.

Sorry its a dumb queston.

Yep, Why suffer the ice pick in the forehead of an amp that's biased so cold just to save the tubes? It just makes no sense. Play with the preamp tubes too. :D
