If you're going to gig, I'd go with the 57 Twin. As much as I love the 5e3, it's only 12 watts and really doesn't have a lot of headroom. It's a great amp and very dynamic. It needs to be mic'd in most band situations though.

I just wanted to thank everybody for all the help and advice. I had to rethink my approach my approach a couple of times along the way, but I guess that's part of the game. Here's what I ended up going with, and my reasoning.

Custom Vibrolux Reverb
I love this amp more than anything else I've ever played. The only other amp I've had such a strong reaction to is the '57 Tweed Twin, which leads to my next choice,

Blues Deluxe
I'm a huge fan of Clapton, both his playing and his tone, but I just couldn't see shelling out three grand for a '57 Twin. On the other hand, I had to have a little of that classic tweed tone, so even though I had just moved away from the HRD, I picked up a Blues Deluxe. I know it's not exactly a professional-grade amp, but I can get some of that classic tweed mojo without breaking the bank.

Blues Junior
A nice little tube combo that's plenty loud enough to play with a group, or a small gig. I got the new emerald version with the Vintage 30 speaker. Another not-so-pro-grade amp, but easier to tote than the two 40-watters listed above.

Super Champ XD
I had to have something I could play at bedroom level, right? And it's very convenient for quick jams because I can get different tones without lugging my pedalboard.

So even though I had all but locked in my choice of a Twin Reverb, until I played the Vibrolux and then the heavenly '57 Twin, my approach changed in mid-stride. And for just the price of the '57, I got a pro-grade blackface, a tweed I like a lot, a nice little tube combo, and a grab-and-go amp with a lot of versatility.

Once again, thanks for everyone's informed advice. It was a big help. Especially the parts about not compromising on the sound I wanted, but not throwing money at something I could never get the potential out of, like the power of a '65 Twin or the expense of a '57 Twin. You guys helped me save a fortune AND find amps I really like. I owe y'all one.

well, maybe a DRRI - will stay clean for a good LOUD while before it starts getting dirty - lightweight too(trust me that is a BIG +)

The Twin is will stay clean even louder

that bassman sounds really really good to me

how about the pro-tube series Twin~Amp, gives you crazy crazy loud clean
+ you get a gain channel - weighs like a hundred pounds tho-

you should really travel somewhere to play all these, stay in the music store 10 hrs if u gotta -

but most people that gotta have that wonderful tube fender tone get a DRRI and just use overdrive pedals or distortion pedals for heav stuff

for me, i love the bass response u get from a 2-12 - i will carry a hundred pounds until i can, i love my amp
you gotta play these amps & see where to go -

I did travel to play all of them, and many others, including the '57 and '65 Twin reissues, the DRRI, the Super Sonic (not really impressed), the Vibro-King (more than I wanted to spend), the Bassman reissue, the Egnater Rebel (at Supro's suggestion), the new hand wired 18-watt Marshall, and the AC-15 and AC-30, plus just about every other amp I could get my hands on. I picked those four (above) due to the various reasons I listed. I can't knock the DRRI, it just wasn't quite my thing. The Vibrolux Reverb turned out to be the driven blackface sound I'd always dreamed of, and cleans up very nicely. it's sort of the opposite of a DRRI. Instead of being a little amp that sounds great pushed, it's a slightly bigger amp that sounds great when you back off of it. I would have liked to have found a '63 Vibroverb reissue, but that's the only amp I couldn't find where I was willing to drive to. It was a long journey, over several months, but I'm happy with the end results.

Wow - congrats on your purchases.

Just to second the reco on George L's cables - they are everything they're cracked up to be. I buy them direct, make my own, and you've never had an easier time wiring up a pedalboard - cut to length, no soldering.

I bought them after reading a guitar cord shootout in Guitar Player where it won for lowest noise. Doesn't hurt that "aluminum hat" Eric Johnson (yes, he's that paranoid/OCD about his tone) uses them too, including brass for rhythm and stainless for lead...

Also great for lead cables. They have 2 straight connectors, one is a normal jack and the other a bit longer to make it easier to pull out of Strat jacks.
