Maybe this is a stupid idea but I'd like to take the amp out of my Hot Rod Deville 4x10 combo, and buy, or build, some housing for it, making it into a half stack. It this something thats possible or common? If so, is there somewhere that makes a cab thats compatible with a HR Deville chassis?

People do it. You'll lessen the tube rattle problem that's so common in the combos. There are some people on www.thefenderforum.com that have done it to various amps. If you're good at cabinet making or know someone who is, it should be no problem. Personally I like separate heads. It's nice to be able to use various speaker cabs.

cool thanks. id like split it up so its not so heavy, and I'm also planning to get a Dual or Tiny Terror Head, and this way I wouldnt need to get an additional cab. It might be cool too to run the HR and DT on a A/B switch. for clean and dirty

Ben, I got an Egnater Rebel 20 a few months ago and never looked back. I run it with two Egnater 112 cabs. Serious fun, versatility and so far reliable. No problems what so ever. T too was looking at the Tiny Terror, but to my old ears, the Rebel just blew it away.

Here's a link to a guy who made a head out of a SF Princeton.

One thing I realized is that the reverb tank is attached to the bottom of the speaker cab. Would I have to (or should I) remove that as well, and attach it to the same cab as the amp?

You should. Just be sure to leave enough room for it.
