Hi all, I have a little bit of a decision to make. Currently I have a Line6 Spider III 15, which I do like, but would like to have a tube amp as well. I tried out the Vibro Champ and the Champion 600, both 5W tubes, which is fine for my level of playing. I just do this for my own enjoyment, so I don't need anything too loud. When I tested them out, the 600 sounded a little too quiet, while the Vibro was much louder. My only problem is that I already have a modelling amp, so I'm trying to determine if the Vibro is that much of an upgrade over the Spider, or do I just get the pure tube amp? Also, regarding the 600, is it unusual for them to be a lot quieter than a Vibro? The 600 is used, so it may be that it needs a tube replacement.

How about a Vox AC4TV (10 inch speaker)?

Man Stuber, if you can swing it, I'd go for a Silver Face Champ or Bronco. Orange also makes a great hand wired 5watt amp. These are just straight tube amps. ART

I looked into the Vox, its an interesting amp, but I'm kinda leaning towards Fender at this point. As far as the silverface, I'm trying to keep the cost at around $200. Saw some on ebay, but am hesitant to buy an amp on ebay. I think I'm leaning towards the Vibro at this point, but maybe if I feel a little crazy, I might go with a Super Champ XD, but thats a little more cash.

I also play for my own enjoyment - I found that I prefer the small wattage amps for home play. It doesn't take much to fill a small space with a lot of sound. (I had a Hot Rod Deluxe that was just too much amp for me to use at home) I have a Vibro XD and its a fun amp. I highly recommend it.

I had a Vox Valvetronix, also a modeling amp, but I did not like the tap tempo control for the effects..... hence the Vibro replacement.

Obviously the Vibro with all of the voicing and effects is more versatile than the Champion 600. I thought the same as you.... the Champion 600 seems kinda of quiet compared to the Vibro.

But if you like the modeling of the Line 6 - is there a real reason to replace it? - a question only you can answer.

You might reconsider the silver face Champ idea or maybe even a new Fender Tube - such as a Pro Jr. Look on Craigslist in your local area. You should be able to score a SF Champ for $200-$250. Maybe a little more. You might find a SF Vibro Champ for slightly more. Craigslist is great because you can test out the equipment unlike ebay. (Use your own guitar and cables) I realize that may be above your $200 budget, but getting a vintage hand wired Fender amp for $250 is not a bad deal.

I horse traded for a blackface Champ and purchased a 1969/70 silverface Princeton for $350 - both from Craigslist. I LOVE both of those amps... and I can imagine my teenage son will take them over someday. :D

Well, I found that Guitar Center had a 10% coupon for Fender products this weekend, so I splurged and got the Super Champ. I've read some great reviews on it, and I liked the idea of a clean channel, so I went for it. Just plugged it in, and it sounds great. Thanks for all the replies.

+1 if not, go for the Vibro Champ or If you're handy a Champ clone kit.

The Champ soungs a lot nicer than the 600 IMHO.

I own a Super Champ XD (that is the Vibro big brother) and a Champion 600 and you could be sure that with the champion 600 you will be much more satisfied if you're looking for a real tube tone. The Super Champ XD is great but if you want that pure tube feel Champion 600 is the winner you can be sure!
