Hi,

I have been thinking about selling my Mesa Boogie Mark IV combo. I know it's a great amp but it's very heavy and too powerful for my needs. Just taking it to the studio requires lifting it in and out of my trunk as well as carrying it up and down a few flights of stairs.

I am primarily a session player but I was just asked to join a band as a full time member. Neither position requires me to crank the amp so I don't need anything too powerful. The main thing I am looking for is versatility. Although I won't be playing any heavy material, a nice crunchy tone would be considered a necessity. I am looking for an amp that can produce shimmering cleans as well as liquid lead tones. If it helps, I love the tones that John Mayer and Eric Clapton achieve.

I have narrowed down my search to the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue and the Egnater Rebel 30. I have heard great things about these amps, especially from members of this forum. Although this is a Fender based forum, I know that you guys offer unbiased opinions, which I respect and appreciate. I know that the final decision is mine but all advice is welcome. Please feel free to suggest other amps with these features that I may have overlooked. My budget is around $1200CDN. Thank you all in advance!

Yeo. It has separate reverb for each channel. It's dogotal. but sounds pretty nice to my ears.

Penguin_21 I have a Rebel 20. It's been an amazing amp and I think it's a great session amp because of all its flexibility. Blending 6V6 and EL 84 power tubes as well as varying the watts from 1 to 20 is also a great feature. I use a JAN Phillips 5751 preamp tube in my Rebel 20 to cut back some of the gain. The gain is cool, but I really don't need that much.

The 30 takes it a step further. It's a two channel amp with a clean and gain channel. Besides having reverb for each channel, you can control the watts for each channel and you have separate EQ for each channel and the channels are foot switchable. The amps are built like tanks and have thick double sided PCB's and quality components. Oh, it also has a Silent Record feature.

Here is the link for the manual

The DRRI is a great amp too. It does one thing and does it beautifully. But IMHO, I think for versatility in session work, the Rebel's the way to go.

It also comes in a 1x1, 2x12 and a head too.

My flame suit is on fellas. He asked for an opinion so I gave it to him. Please don't suggest the HRD series for session work. I do session work too from time to time and the HRDlx just don't cut it.

OK .... Here's a thought.

You say it's between the Deluxe Reverb and the Egnater Rebel 30.

How about the Egnater Rebel 30 AND this Boss FDR-1 Fender Deluxe Reverb Pedal? Giving you both sounds for your money. Not the real Deluxe Reverb - but maybe a reasonable facsimile of it. And, depending on where you get it, you might have a bit of money left over.

I would have recommended the Cyber-Twin SE because of it's sound and versatility, except that you will be going up and down stairs. The weight of the CT SE is about 50 to 55 lbs (I've forgotten exactly). If that much weight is acceptable, nothing beats it for versatility, and it sounds great, IMHO. But it might be over the budget, which could disqualify it from consideration.

Link to the Fender Cyber-Twin SE page

Fender Cyber Twin SE Amp at Musicians Friend (they also list a "used" one - but it's listed separately)

Just some thoughts for your consideration. :D

I've been able to dial in some decent Fender-like tones with the Egnater on the 6V6 side. It does a really credible Princeton Tweed thing. I wasn't blown away by the FDR-1 at all. The reverb was kind of funky if you turn it up and hit the strings hard.

Rholloman, thank you for your suggestions. However, I am looking for a tube amp. I don't even plan on using many effects with it. I just need a great sounding, versatile amp!

Thank you all for your replies so far. Please keep them coming!

Here are my 2 cents, if you're after Fender tone through and through, then definately go with the Deluxe Reverb Reissue as nothing else can duplicate it. Although not as versatile as the egnater nothing can do Fender tone like Fender. With that said, if you're truly after a versatile amp, the rebel 30 would be my choice. It won't nail the fender tone but it's pretty close and you'll also be able to get those high gain tones that are similiar to Mesa as well, though not exactly either. Just depends on what you're after. But both are great amps.
Good luck.

What about a Fender Super-Sonic?

Thank you for your suggestion. The Super-Sonic is a bit too heavy for me. Even if I opted to get the head and cab instead of the combo, the cab alone weighs almost as much as my Mesa.

You will need a cab for the Egnaters as well.

I was planning on getting the Egnater 1x12 cabinet if I chose to get the Rebel 30. It only weighs 31lbs.

How do you guys like the Egnater 112x? Do you feel that it compliments the Rebel well? I have read mixed reviews on it. The consensus is that it's a great little cabinet with a lot of clarity and bottom end. However, a few people have stated the opposite.

I have an Egnater 1x12 and I really like it. I think it just depends on you EQ settings. It has plenty of bottom end for me. When I use Humbucker equipped guitars I use the bright switch, single coils I turn it off. I'm going to get a second cab as soon as I get some time and a coupon from GC. I can probably get 10% off. :D
