It depends on a lot of things. cabinet design, ported, closed or open back, speaker manufacturer etc. But usually 10's are a little tighter in the bass response, 12's a little fuller and give the impression of the amp beings slightly louder because you're moving more air. YMMV

I agree and also the kind of speakers that you're planning to use, obviosly, will have a big difference on what kind of sound you get.

If you went with the 10" Ragin Cajuns you would have one heck of a great cabinet...they are a nice replacemenmt for the stock 10" in the SCXD...I kept the stock in mine but a guy I know did make a 2 x 10 with them and wow very nice!

I agree, also the type of music you play is a big factor. If you play alot of dropped d tunning then maybe 12's would be better choice. Different styles of music required different types of speakers, cabinets, etc. Heck, if you got the money and the time, build both.

My experience with a 2X10(Naylor & Weber)open back compared to a 2X12(Weber & Celestion)open back would be that the 2X10's are very focused and favor the mids to mid highs. The 2X12's treat the frequencies in a more balanced way and disperse the sound in a fuller sense. These are driven by late '60 Fender 45watt amps. I play blues & roll rhythm and a few lead lines.( through a double blocked tailed Strat) ART

cool thanks for the info . i'm not sure of the wood i would use but i planned on making a removable panel in the back so i could make it open or closed
and not sure of the speaker yet . I thought of doing a mismatch type set up . it seems to work on the egnators and marshalls.

Birch plywood is a really nice way to go. Alot of Fender amps are made with the Birch...so you can't go wrong on that end.

In most cases I like the 12's better. They seem to put a little more vibration into the floor when cranked up. The funny thing is that my Vibro King comes with 3 10's, but the matching cab comes with 2 12's. Its a real beast when you get the tubes heated up.

I would definitely go with birch plywood. The removable back is a great idea, or make one side closed back and the other side open back. The Mesa/Boogie Roadster cabs are made this way. I've been wanting to make an ext. cab too. I'm gonna go with 2x12's, birch plywood. Not sure about speaker type/brand yet. Depends on how much money I have to spend I guess.

Here is a good analogy a friend of mine made... at 10" speaker is like a ball peen hammer, a 12" is like a sledge hammer....I kind of liked that!!!
