i have been really into the 70's clapton tones lately (Live from the 70's, Just One Night, Live at the Filmore, etc.), which seem distinctly different than the current tweed-based tones he gets now. I think he used Music Man and Marshall amps back then - its a 'cleaner' sound than the tweeds (or at least a little less 'hair' around each note). there is better seperation and it seems like more of a twangy sound to it, though it still has some 'edge/bite' and breakup to it. i could imagine it being effective for the stinging type of buddy guy tone, as well.

IF you guys are familiar with the tones i am referencing, is there anything currently available that might be a good match for this. for example, i have no experience with fender blackface models, but is that where i need to go? or will the best bets be to try out some marhsalls for the first time? I need to be able to play it at home, ideally with some for of natural break-up but im not against using a transparent OCD pedal i have either?

any thoughts from those of you that know what tones i am trying to get???

thanks guys!

interesting, i have seen a lot of good comments about the SCXD.

can it also get the classic tweed champ tone. obviously, the newer one has a lot of 'extras' to it but how similar to the tweed is it at heart?

i have been thinking that a nice compact practice amp might be a good addition - so if i could get this clapton tone i am after in a practice amp, i guess so much the better.

thanks

I know EC uses a 57 tweed twin amp with his signature guitar that gets very unstrat like tones with the tbx boost .I think in the 70s he used "blackie" and "brownie "still with marshal amps,so maybe you need to go from there.

BJr. Settings (compare the typical BJr setting-if you have one: vol 5, T8, B8, M5 with TwinStack, so like mids off without Twinstack. Presence normal, no Fat, no boost.) vs.

SCXD-like BJr:
1. Clean Channel-Channel 1, Treble 7, Bass 10.

70's Just One Night - I believe it was still his Music Man period and his Blackie Strat. Probably the HD130 heads.

If you're not keen to that, a blackface bassman/showman/bandmaster could get you part of the way there.

Someone on this board or another said the recipe for a person's tone is:

1 part their guitar
1 part their amp & effects
2 parts them

The portions may slightly vary, but Eric sounds like Eric through a tweed champ, Marshall, Fender, Music Man, Soldano, etc.

i hear you - i dont expect anything coming from my humble fingers to ever be confused with eric, that is for sure!

but i do like that tone quite a bit, even for playing non-EC sounds.

i wonder, would any of the blackface reissues (PRRI, DRRI) be useful to achieve the Just One Night or 70's era tone or would those amps be TOO clean
and icey??
