I have a SCXD (I really only ever use the clean channel, which I love) and I'm waiting for delivery of a G-Dec, which is for headphones and mucking around with 'features' – I don't expect it to sound brilliant.

For pure self-indulgence (I only play at home) I'd like one of the reissues – either a 65 Princeton Reverb or a 65 Deluxe Reverb.

Which would you buy and would it make the SCXD redundant?

There's only a 7 watt difference and the DRRI is a much nicer and giggable amp if you ever decide to go that route. It's a lot more versatile amp too.

As usual, I agree with supro. The PRRI is nice, and definitely a great amp for home use, but if you can afford it, the DRRI is a better amp. It has a beautiful clean tone, and great reverb. The PRRI is very similar in these regards too, but I'd go for the DRRI.

I played at home with my Vibrolux, Bandmaster and my Twin. The DRRI is just a superior amp. It has a volume knob just like the Princeton. A princeton would make his SCXD redundant.

I use my DRRI almost exclusively at home, and in a condo at that. A friend of mine has a PRRI, and while it is a great amp, I think we both perfer the fuller sound of my DRRI.

This has been an interesting thread since I've been going through a similar choice lately. I opted for the Princeton Reverb due to the power of the amp - since I'm only doing bedroom playing I don't need many watts. Then I saw this thread and it looks like the majority of players prefer the Deluxe Reverb.

When I purchased my Princeton I had to take a floor model because there were no others in stock. I noticed a couple of scratches and cuts in the tolex on the cabinet and asked the salesman about that. They wouldn't discount the amp but they offered to replace it when a new one came into the shop. However, they have several DRRIs on hand. I wonder if I could trade the Princeton back for the Deluxe? Now you have me thinking...

Personally, I would.Wattage wise there isnt a huge difference at home.If you ever decide to gig with it, the princeton might not be enough, especially if you have a loud drummer. The DRRI would cut thru most mixes .JMHO.

Definitely return the PRRI for the DRRI. For a tube amp, the DRRI produces amazing tone at low volume (using the second inputs I can happily play while my wife sleeps in the other room).

The DRRI takes pedals well, and it can hang with most drummers. Some of my favorite tones came out while pushing the amp with a drummer. In fact, the few times I've used it with a drummer and bassist, I ended up bypassing my pedals and going straight through the amp for most of the night.

The Princeton's claim to fame was as a recording amp and small practice amp, not a gigging amp. It was the next step up from a Champ and Bronco amp.
You can gig with a Champ or even a 3 watt Pignose, but it's a pain in the neck. Don't get me wrong, it's a great sounding amp, but it does have it's limitations.

I did it! With the positive recommendations I've seen here I decided I would trade my Princeton Reverb for a Deluxe Reverb. The DRRI is the model I had my eye on originally but I opted for the lower watt rating of the Princeton. The comments here suggested that the DRRI sounded great at bedroom levels too so I decided to go for the more flexible amp.

No problem with the exchange at Guitar Center. I had to take another floor model which seemed okay - no damage to the cabinet, dials, etc., and the amp sounded great during my brief test. When I got it home, one of the things I noticed about the DRRI was the depth of the reverb. The Princeton didn't seem to get nearly as much effect. I turned the DRRI reverb dial up to 6 and the sound was almost dripping wet. Surf baby!

The bad news: the vibrato doesn't seem to work. I turned the speed and intensity dials way up and I couldn't hear any appreciable tremolo, unlike on the PRRI. I don't know how the vibrato channel works. Is it possible I have a loose, or a bad tube? The GC guys will exchange this amp when they get a new one but if there's something easy to check and/or fix it would save me the hassle - the DRRI is much heavier to lug around than the PRRI!

Thanks for all the input about these amps. I think I'll be happy with this amp for a long time.
