There are many better tube amps than the 600. It really needs a better speaker. IMHO The stock 6" just goes all raspy and boxy near full volume. Any SF or BF Champ sounds better to me. It's a $150 tube amp. It's cheaply made and sounds it. I know someone who gutted his and turned it into a PTP 600 with a better speaker and it sounds great. He used the same iron and used high quality caps and resistors.

Personally, I never run my 600 wide open. I run it around 4 or 5, dead stock everything. I'll throw a Lovepedal Les Lius for overdrive and sometimes I'll add a Boss Fender Reverb after that for a little depth.

I'm quite content with the resulting tube tone we dream about, cheap speaker and all. It all depends on what volume level I want to play at. If I want some power, I reach for my Evil Twin, or crank up my '65 Princeton RI. My point is that the 600 is a niche amp. I believe Mr. Clapton sang, "... it's in the way that you use it."

With my pedal combination, playing Strats, Teles, and Les Pauls, the 600 gets very Tweed-like. I smile now every time I see one of the $999 Tweed '57 Champ reissues, especially since I snagged my 600 off eBay for just over $100.

I understand why the amp on its own could use some upgrading, but, that misses the whole point of it being an entry level/practice tube amp. Overdriven to taste, the ride can still be very sweet indeed. 8)
