I was jamming with my friend yesterday and he complained about the tone of my Hot Rod Deville 2x12. He said it was to brittle and that it was bleeding his ears. I was wondering if their were any mods I could do or any changes so that I have the best possible Hot Rod Deville. Also , does anyone else have the same problem where your 2x12 Hot rod deville sounds very trebly in a gross way or where the tone is so brittle that its pierces the ear hard?

Hey, what channel do you have it set on? Are you using the clean channel, or the clean channel with a pedal or one of the drive channels?

And yeah, fenders are pretty much known for their trebly goodness. What are your settings (Treble, bass, middle, presence) and the guitar your using?

And you dont want to go down the road of modding unless you have to. And if you do, then it will be a simple task of swapping out preamp tubes to tame it.

You may wish to try using a graphic equalizer pedal like the Boss GE-7 pedal. I use one with my DeVille and it helps to 'fatten up' my tone. The GE-7 is about $100 new but it can often be had for much less if you check out Craigslist or Ebay.

Tell your friend to GF......there is nothing wrong with the HRD....you just spend some time tweaking the eq's a bit and you will have a more than satisfactory tone mate.

Having had a hotrod deluxe and presently own a blues deluxe, i can say that they can get icepickey, especially in the drive channel.EQ is important .Make sure you dont have the treble turned up too high.Another thing too is dont be afraid to use the tone pots on your guitar.Alot of people just set them on 10 and forget about it, but trebley overdrive very rarely sounds good.Other than that a tube change in the preamp section might be in order.

There's two inputs on that amp and I think input 1 is a hotter ( or boosted ) signal. Try the other input. I love those amps but tamming the roar is the challenge. I will never buy another amp higher than 50 watts the rest of my life. I just can't find a place to use them. But the deville is defantly a good choice IMHO.

This setup has ticked off a few drummers..
But the tones possible are quite impressive..
On its own with ,4-10's it smokes..
With the closed back 4x10 Marshall cab.
It picks up a bit of darkness..
I also use a Marshall 4x12 angled cab and an old Ampeg 2x12 , both loaded with Celestion V-30"s..
Sometimes I been known to run a Marshall DSL 100 with the DeVille linked threw a good delay pedal for a nice stereo spread..
Set the Marshall dirty, the Fender clean, Univibe and Boss CS-3 & DD5..
It takes on a very spooky Robin Trower vibe.. ;)
I Like It!

You should be fine but don't be afraid to crank up the mid and bass on your amp really high and keep your treble down to half, and presence to nearly nothing. This will add some oomph to your sound overall anyway. Obviously a lot depends on your guitar, too. Also on where you're listening to it all form. Move around the room so you can hear what other people may be hearing. You'll be amazed at the difference if you've never gone walkies before!

I don't think I'd mod my amp for someone else. I set it up so that I like it.
