I've seen some other threads concerning this issue, but have yet to come across a solution other than "return it for a different one."

My brand new Champion 600 is making an intermittent crackling sound on both inputs at variable volumes using multiple guitars. I tried replacing the tubes and cleaning the connectors with contact cleaner, but the sound is still present.

I'm thinking that this is a real common problem with these because I tried a few at GC before purchasing this one and one of the amps I tested made this noise as well. The other amp just had an ok tone (like a few others I've played in the past).

I'd like to fix the one I've got because it has a real nice tone compared to others I've tried. Plus GC is almost an hour away.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

It's brand new, I'd take it back and look at the Vibro Champ or Marshall Class 5. That way the trip won't be wasted. You're not going to get a solid tube amp for $150.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Supro on the return. It's a drag, but it doesn't make much sense in having a tech go over a new amp. I know it's not much help, but if you're looking for a solid small amp, Orange used to have a 5watt hand wired amp(1-EL84 & 1-12AX7). ART

Yeah, I get that sound too ^^ I'm gonna wait to see if it does it after I get some new tubes in there, and if that doesn't work I'll spend $40 bucks on a new speaker. If new tubes and new speaker don't fix it I'll take it back to my local music store and ask the owner to give me the real price on a 57 champ :P

Thanks guys.

I called Fender customer support and they said to return it for a different one. I probed the guy for info on how to fix it and he pretty much said "don't bother."

Capo - I tried a few different replacement tubes (some same as stock, some not) and the noise was still there. I don't have a cab to plug the amp into, so I couldn't rule out the speaker, but the noise (for mine anyway) doesn't sound like it's coming from the speaker. If you're going to upgrade the tubes/speaker, you might wind up throwing money into it to no avail.

I've seen people gut it and build a hand wired version using the trannies, chassis cab and speaker. :D Caps, resistors and pots are cheap.

That's cool, thanks for the good word. My Ampeg gets back from the shop in a few days (Swapped two prong cord for 3 prong, check caps, pots, etc.), so I just got to deal with it until then. I think I might just sit tight and see if a nice silverface or some other "vintage" champ comes in used or do as 63 Supro and others suggest and build a clone.

I have a 74 SF Champ and I love that thing. It's a great sounding amp. I found it about 10 years ago and bought it without even trying it out.
