Just for mucking around at home, what's the best multi-effects amp? Needs headphones out and all the knobs on the front, where I can get at them for arms-reach, laid-back, late night noodling.

Was thinking one of the Fender Cybers, a G-Dec 30, Spider Jam (in spite of my anti-Line 6 prejudice) or a Peavey Vypyr, Behringer something.... anything you can suggest?

(No expectation of super analogue sound quality – just a bit of fun – I'll run it alongside a SCXD.)

I have a GDec 30 and regret not getting the Spider Jam. The 30 just bores me now and I just play backing tracks through it. You also have to sort through too many effects and turn many of them off just to get a decent sound. The midi tracks get tiring after a while. The Jam you can actually record on.

I will start off by saying I am a Fender man through and through...but...the Marshall MG15FX is a nice little amp. 15 watts, SS, with a ton of effects and headphone jack all in one nice little package. I have one and well..when I want to jam and not disturb my wife I plug into this little monster.

Line 6 are a GOOD company, its just anything they make with the word, "SPIDER" in it sucks, badly. the flextones, the vettas and all they're effects pedals and boards are insanely good.

The line 6 pocket pods are really good, really really good. Look into them.

Either that or a one of the cyber fender things, i find the marshalls a little boring.

I use a Vox AD 30 Valvetroinics for home use it has a built in attenuator so you can have it at 1 watt and wind the volume up it does a good modelling job of valve amps , my favourite is the Blackface and bonus you can pick them up dead cheap because the have brought a new model out …. Worth a punt

For a little practice amp I like my Roland Cube 20x..
Lots of features like headphone out / cd-in / power squeezer to drop output to 2 watts for evening fooling, some digital effects and modeling.

Funny isn't it? I had one and hated virtually every sound that came out of the darned thing! Sold it last week.

Anyway, I'm awaiting delivery of a G-Dec 30... I know everyone says it has it's limitations compared to the Spider Jam, but it's more compact, not as loud, cheaper (it's only a 'fun' amp after all – and I got a deal), it's a big upgrade on the standard G-Dec... and it's got Fender written on the front.

depends if you like the traditional sounds or whether you want a modern sound with the line 6 stuff.

Mind you i had my pocket pod for 4 weeks then lost it, to never see it again. But other than that, i thought it was good stuff. (Until i used it with an amp in my garage and a guy slammed on the door telling me to shut the hell up or he'd kill me and then i asked for proof that he would do it, then i heard the sound a gun reloading so i had to kinda had to back down at that point but still, it made some good sounds)

My original GDec 15 went back because the data wheel went bad in a couple months. Fender gave me credit but it took six weeks. I got the 30 instead. It's got Fender written on the front, but it says made in China on the back.
I just ordered a footswitch for it from Sweetwater for $59.99 and free shipping. it's the cheapest price going. I highly recommend the switch.

Reassuring to hear from you supro – I remember one of your previous comments unnerved me a little, so I'm glad you've 'kept the faith'. I ordered the footswitch with the amp – I decided to buy both new, so if I have any problems like you did it can go back.

I can suffer the amps being made in China, but hope it never goes that way for the guitars.... like I said on one of those tedious MIM vs. MIA threads, at least we're not discussing MIC vs. MIT (China/Taiwan)

Sorry, didn't mean to unnerve you. I tend to do that a lot.

Not all stuff from China is bad. My Egnater is built in China and inspected and tested in Chicago. It's a great amp. My Ibanez Artcore AS73 was built in China and I originally bought it as a beater, but it wound up one of my favorites. It sounds and plays great and the build quality is nearly flawless. If it ever gets stolen at a gig I'll have no worries. I'll just get a new one.

It all depends on what kind of quality control is employed. Fender didn't fix my GDec, they just gave me a credit for it. Fenders QC really seems to be lacking lately.

It wasn't the fact of it being made in China that unnerved me, but I thought I read on another thread that you'd had a problem with the G-Dec and wished you'd got a Spider Jam... maybe I'm mistaken and it was someone else who said that.

I did. The data wheel went south and would randomly pick tracks and presets when you turned it. But that was on my 15. I traded up to a 30 because the 15 had a lot of bad data wheels. I've had no luck what so ever with new Fender amps.
Here's a site dedicated to the GDec.
