That's a pretty funky looking mod. His execution was pretty bad too. That's just dangerous with bare leads hanging across the board with 3-400 volts in there.
Be aware that if you mod your amp while it's under warranty, you'll void it.

These amps also have pretty thin boards too. Billm takes no responsibility for your workmanship or your warranty. Be careful.

I don't get it. What was the point of this mod?

Me either.
I hate when other people tell you what you NEED to do to your amp to make it sound right or have features other people say you NEED. If I need anything other than tubes or on a rare occasion a speaker change, it's because It's something I want to do, not because someone else tells me to. A lot of lower and middle end amps have been turned into unreliable pieces of garbage because of modding these low end PCB's. If an amp needed a bunch of mods, why buy it? Tube changes are fun and don't void your warranty or ruin a perfectly good amp same thing with speakers.

The mods for the Hot Rod series amps are IMHO nothing but turd polish. Most people who buy these amps are perfectly happy with them until some so-called amp guru tells them their amp needs to be modded to sound great. It usually never does. It's just someone else's opinion of what sounds great.

The guy who did that mod obviously had zero experience in electronics. The way he did that mod is potentially dangerous as well. I don't understand why he didn't locate the jack closer to the connection point. What a ding dong.

Interesting, guess the guy just wanted to use a more complex- versatile digital pre amp at line level. At first, I thought he was going for a tube pre amp, like the Mesa V-Twin(think that's the name). Actually, I don't have a problem with the idea, just the hook-up design and wiring layout. Twenty years ago I did about the same thing to a '50s Oahu to achieve a line out and it still works fine, but so much in that amp is flying leads and components mounted to sockets that it matches LOL ! IMHO, Modding your personal amp is fine and can be very educational, if not rewarding. I've learned more from my failures than successes. But I certainly try to pre-empt those failures with foresight and planning. Responsible experimentation is okay in my book! ART

Ok, I will get on my soap box..LOL...Why even buy the amp or guitar in the first place??? I am very traditional...Fender...have been in business for over 60 years...they have a tried and true formula for success, superior products and a distinctive sound. There is nothing in the world that I find more pleasurable than a Fender Tele plugged into any Fender amp...that is the tone. Why everyone wants to sound like this guy or that guy...man...just find your own tone. I love Brad Paisley and Keith Urban's tone...but I am no tthem...I am me. I would never ever dream of butchering my awesome SCXD like that. Ok...I am off the soap box.. I don't judge guys for moding their gear...I just don't understand why.

Hey don't get me wrong! I'm not advocating the modifcation of a vintage amp or an amp someone is happy with. I have a great respect for amp designers. It seems to me that the fella bought the amp with the intention of making it suit his needs. The fact that it didn't have the line in wasn't a good enough reason not to have the rest of that Fender Champ sound. The idea of buying a kit amp and tinkering to learn is my ideal. But some of us tinker and strive to tailor our sound on whatever amp we have. It's pretty much akin to what you said about each of us being different and having our own sound. ART
