Honestly mate get a desktop fan behind the amp blowing air into it. Its a old trick round the uk, you'll be pleasntly suprised at how it helps an amp stay cooler. Air circulation is the key. In all honesty fender amps have never been designed with it in mind. They all seem to be excessively closed backed restricting airflow. It maybe worth cutting a new piece of board with a decent amount of air holes in it too.

I think the simplicity of the Pro Jr is what saves it. EL84's isn't Fenders Classic sound anyway. I like them in my Rebel, they have kind of a Vox sort of high end chime to them. Mix them with 6V6's and it's pure magic.

As for reverb, BYOC has a reverb pedal kit that I might try with my Rebel. If it's any good I'll be sure to let everybody know. It's about $90 and you build it yourself.

Reading some posts, seems like the HRDX is a piece of crap.

Don´t be misled. My Hotrod has lasted me 15 years trouble free, the small bulbs are still the original ones, NOT ONCE this amp has let me down of malfunctioned ever, even some drunk spilled his drink on top, and some chick tripped over it more than once.

Not to mention the TONE.

Come on! am I the only one with a good HRDX?.

Possibly :D Just my opinion but they are pieces of crap. My crapped out NOT ONCE BUT THREE TIMES IN LESS THAN SIX MONTHS and on stage no less and I'm not some kid cranking the crap out of it and tossing it around. Preamp tubes can last decades. I find it funny that you call them bulbs LOL. There was a site dedicated to the problems associated with the HRDlx but Justin took it down. You got lucky, great, but there are many of us who weren't so lucky.

IMO, Calling the HRDlx a great amp is misleading.
It was the most unreliable amp I've owned in over 40 years of playing Fender tube amps and I'm not the only one who thinks that.

you guys that had problems with your hot rods ,what years were they? i think fender has addressed most of the issues with these amps. my bdri is a good amp. all i did was change tubes because i didn"t like their tone and replaced the speaker. i did a lot of research before i bought mine, mostly playing it at the store a couple of times and realy bugging the sales guys about it. i pulled a clapton mod ,like mine ,off the rack and pluged in because thats what it's going to sound like at home...the neighbors tell me it sounds great( i got cool neighbors).

Too bad they didnt mount the tubes on the chassis like my bassman ri and use a better board.A few small changes and it would have been way more reliable.I have been one of the lucky ones so far,but to be honest , I play my bassman wherever I can because it is a workhorse of an amp.I play my blues jr for now , but as soon as I can I will probably get an egnater .Gets some great reviews by some seasoned musicians who know their stuff .You cant beat the versitility of these amps.

i said i didn't have any problems my bad , i did have a speaker jack that didn't work too well but i got it fixed but no board problems or tube socket problems all that seems to be fine. i had the tec that fixed it look over the amp he said all was ok. if thats the only prob i have with it then i got a good one (no trainees at the factory that day). the only thing i wish fender would change is the use of lenier pots in amps only use audio taper.

No trainees involved. The components are more than likely machine loaded and wave soldered by computer operated machinery. It's a poor design pure and simple built to a so-called lower price point.

Mine is a 1994-95. Maybe newer ones are indeed lower quality

I don´t think it´s accurate to generalize like that. Mine works perfect and my cuz has one too, we bought them 2gether, his is ok too.
