I'm looking at sticking a EVM12L speaker in my Blues Deluxe Reissue. I am wanting to go to the 16 Ohm version of the speaker, even though the original version is 8 Ohm. I am wanting to do that so I can reduce the output of the amp, and then be able to turn up the volume more so I can get the tubes hotter... Is this a problem for the amp?

Thanks!

I believe it is, from what I've been told you always want to match the impedance of the speaker with that of the output transformer. If you don't you'll have things going wrong sooner than later. So keep an 8 ohm speaker plugged in at all times, or as many speakers as you want that are configured for a total of 8 ohms.
If you want to be able to run your tubes hot but keep the volume down you might want to do some research on hot plates/attenuators, but that's a different topic on itself.

Very interesting, Elvis. If this were an older amp(60- 70's), I'd say yeah no problem, they could take 100% mismatch in stride. The 16ohm speaker would lower the output a little bit, but the EV is so efficient the percieved volume may be higher. Also the impedance would constipate the power section somewhat, the tubes would run cooler and the output trans would not be running at it's full potential. Instead, I'd try lower gain preamp tubes, power tubes, and a less efficient speaker to tame this beast. ART

Thanks for the replies everyone. We put an EVM12L 8 ohm in it, and I'm happy with that. I also got to thinking, using 16 instead of 8 might adversly effect the sound quality, too...

Anyway, thanks again.

That's a safe choice, Elvis. How does an EV sound in that amp? I can imagine the cleans are big and strong. The pre amp must be quite a bit more articulate. How's that power section translate through the EV. It seems like such a dichotomy. But Mesa Boogie sure made good use of it in the MK III. And the '79 Vibrosonic had a 15" EV speaker. Excellent thinking! Hope it sounds just great! ART
