Over the weekend I was breaking in my new Weber 50 watt speaker for my Blues Junior. Had the volume up and the bass. On certain notes on the on the 6th and 5th string, I would get a noticeable rattle/buzz/virbration.

So, what would cause this....bad power tube? Problem with the speaker? Something mechanical with the amp? Nothing?

I also should add that I didn't max the volume. It was loud, but by no means uncomfortably so.

I rarely crank this amp so this is the first time I've heard the rattle. I also had the bass up a fair amount to get the speaker moving. On more regular volumes, the speaker sounds great, so it is isn't a huge problem.

More curious than anything else. Also, I played at bedroom levels for on and off for a week before I cranked the new speaker.

Hopefully you didn't over-tighten the speaker and warp the cage or flatten the gasket to a point where the cage is touching the baffle. Speakers don't need to be cranked down.

Tube rattle is also a possibility. While playing a note, touch each tube with a pencil eraser. If the rattle stops, it's the tube.

I don't think so. I was pretty careful. I tightened it until the screw wouldn't turn under VERY LITTLE pressure. I might back them all off a little to see what happens.

It doesn't sound as though you overtightened the basket. You could run your finger tip around the baffle- basket junction to see if there is a small gap. If so,you're good. I wouldn't backoff the speaker now. Instead, I would go ahead and play it for a good 20hrs, then check after the gasket has compressed a bit. You could also sub another speaker cab, to take the internal speaker out of the equation. I'm leaning towards the tube rattle possibility, especially if the bass was cranked. It requires more power from the power tubes and is more likely to produce sympathetic vibrations.ART
