I just bought a 98 Blues Deville and I love everything about it except for one thing. It seems that when I turn down the volume on my guitar or the amp to rhythm level, the sound gets really dark. At first I thought it was my guitar, so I tried out 2 other guitars and the same thing happened which leads me to think that it is the amp.
So my questions are:
Has this happened to you guys with any of your fender amps?
Do you have an idea if I could mod my amp to get rid of this but not make my high volume tinny and brittle?

I found that to be common on the earlier hotrod series. The treble and reverb are dependant on volume.

In your case it could be a bad preamp valve, though the eq tends to go mushy rather than dark when their on the way out. Try swapping em all round and see if it makes any difference. If it does bung some new 12ax7's in it.

i found this effect to be consistent with any guitar. volume pots in stock form typically bleed treble to ground as you lower them, making it seem darker.

as far as the amp goes, even with solid state i always found that volume naturally will make it seem brighter. at low volume, there is less air being pushed at you, so your ears don't perceive the upper mids and highs as you would in band settings. henceforth, many people might find the golden tone in their bedroom, but then take it to the stage and destroy everyone's ears in the audience because the golden tone is now suddenly an icepick. why? the golden tone most likely required a little extra treble and upper mids in order to combat the low volume and possibly carpeting and furniture, which soak up highs like a sponge in water

by the way, do you face your speaker head on, or do you stand by it with the speaker pointed at your knees? best way to hear the sound in true form is to have your ears in direct line of attack of the speaker.

I just swapped the tubes with some old RCA's and it still does it so its not the preamp tubes.

Also I play with the amp facing me for the most part. I tried the brightness button on the amp and couldn't tell a difference so as far as I'm concerned its broken or worthless!
