I have a tweed Blues Jr. with the upgraded speaker I love it.

In the neverending "Chase for Sound" -- I'm thinking of adding a 65 Princeton Reverb to my Fender amps mix.... I also have a 57 Champ -- based mainly on this excellent video from Jim Campilongo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHVG4kDurtY

My question is this: Would a 65 Princeton Reverb add anything the Blues Jr. and Champ that I already have or not?

If yes, why?

If not, why not?

I thank you!

If yes, why?Absolutely, for one the PRRI is the blackface classic Fender sound, with tube driven reverb .It has a tube rectifier as opposed to solid state. It also has 6v6 tubes as opposed to el84s .Tremolo is a bonus, plus the PRRI is made much better, the tubes are mounted on the chassis as opposed to the pcb.Overall a better and more reliable amp.I have a blues jr and there is no comparison.

If not, why not?

I thank you!

Wowser! Thanks for the excellent response! I appreciate your real world experience and you've convinced me to make the move!

WOW! What a great amp. I picked mine up at Best Buy on labor day. Was in the store a month before and tried it out with a Strat but couldn't dig up the cash. When i went back it was on clearance for $599 - 10%. I grabbed it and immediately sold my Carvin Vintage 16. You can't beat plugging a Fender guitar into a Fender amp. If you want that clean spank from your Strat or Tele, this is the amp. The bonus tremolo circuit is just icing on the cake. You gotta try one out.

That's a fantastic price! I'm definitely going to buy one. I can't wait to compare the sound with my other amps.

The Princeton is light years ahead of the Blues Jr in tone and construction. I'm not too sure about the tubes being mounted to the chassis though. They might be on their own board separate from the main board but I'm not sure. I hope someone who owns one can clarify this.

Tonally the only thing tweed about the BJ is the covering. I would dump the BJ and put the money towards the Princeton. Once you play the Princeton you won't use the BJ anymore anyway. :D Blues Jr's always sounded a little boxy to me YMMV. If you want to cover a lot of territory get an Egnater.

Supro, I have a Bjr and they are very boxy sounding. When I get some cash I am gonna maybe replace it for a 57 tweed deluxe kit.I checked out mojotone and they arent too bad pricewise.

Thanks for the heads up support for the Princeton. I haven't read one unkind thing about that amp in my research.

Egnater, on the other hand, seems to get a lot of mixed reviews on their variable low watt amp. I was surprised to read those comments because I know a lot of people like the brand.

Are there any tube amps that have a headphones out? I haven't been able to find one, while most digital versions have that feature.

Not that I know of. I've never seen a headphone jack in a tube amp. I really haven't really seen too many mixed reviews on any Egnater amps. Just a few. Nothing horrible. I know some people really don't understand what goes on with the power knob. It's a decrease in db's but one watt is still loud. Most of the videos I've seen on the Egnaters are from guy's who don't understand how to use them either. They just crank the gain and wank away. All I know is mine's been bullet proof so far. I've done quite a few gigs with it and it's been flawless.

If you had to choose between the variable low watt Egnater and a Princeton Reverb -- which one would you pick and why?

You turned down a great amp without even trying it out for yourself? That's a shame. Like I said, I found so few negative reviews and am still hard pressed to find much negative about it.

Marshall AVT series. I had an AVT20, but side-by-side with a SCXD it sounded appalling with my Strats and Tele.

I don't know if I'd call the Marshall AVT series a tube amp. It has a preamp tube but a solid state power section. It's a hybrid. I never found a hybrid that I ever liked except maybe an old 65 watt Music Man.

Sorry you got scraed oiff from a great amp, dude.

At Musicians Friend there is exactly one negative review among 20 or 30 glowing, raving 5-star reviews, and it was posted much farther back in time than a couple months ago. Not "several," but one. So, I don't know what you thought you saw, but if you're going to make decisions based one "omens," you should make sure you're seeing what's actually there.
