The ultimate chorus is a really good amp. I used to gig with a marshall mode four, its solid and tube. Sounds really great but far to big. So I bought a used Ultimate Chorus. I have the older model without the DSP on it. It has good sounding reverb and chorus and is very loud. The clean sounds are amazing. The overdrive section is ok, but I use pedals anyway so just leave the amp on clean mode.

Like so many people here have said, the best thing about SS amps is you can plug in and play, no waiting for the to warm up, and hardly any maintenance. I like having something reliable, when I want to play, I plug in and I'm rocking straght away!

If you can get a good price, go for it!

Dale

To me the tube vs solid state question is subjective. I have owned really good amps from all types, as well as hybrids. I have also owned really crummy amps of both types. The new SS amps have come a long way towards emulating tube amps. Some, in fact good enough, that I defy even the most hard core out there to tell the difference by sound alone. I've used both, and remember the time years back when SS guitar amps were the new thing, and I swore I'd keep my '64 Pro Reverb running forever, no matter WHAT the cost. Thankfully the solid state amps have finally inproved. I own a '59 Tweed Bassman LTD. which I love. I own a Vox Night Train, which is great. I also own a Fender Jazz King which sounds much like a Twin. I own a couple of Peavey Bandit II's that have been absolute work horses for five or six years. I own a Peavey Ranger (tube) which is an absolute dog. I owned several Marshall tube amps that were so inconsistant, performance wise, I've sworn off that brand completely. No offence to anyone, just personal opinion.

After all I'm just a "hobbyist"

I have a Fender 212 FM DSP. It's loud as hell for a solid state and most of the modeling channels are good (except the metal) It's great for getting a lot of different sounds without a ton of pedals. Plus, I like having an ear phone jack for when I'm playing and the baby is sleeping or the wife is in a mood ha ha. I would love some advice from anyone on a good general setting for 80's rock, i.e. Bryan Adams, The Cars, Some Clapton...

Tubes are cool, don't get me wrong but for a lot less money you can get a great solid state that you don't have to blast to get a good tone, but if you throw the head phoes on (A good pair of Sony bass headphones for about 80 bucks will be a great investment.) you can rock it out.

I had a Super Showman rig for around 20 years and it was great! Of course I had to pick through about a dozen heads and cabs before I found the ones that worked. Fender sold these to dealers for pennies. I got the whole rig, two 4 X 12 powered cabs, and pre-amp amp for $75 brand new in 1970. I've attached an ad from the period.Image

You are my new best friend..lol. Beautiful amp!! As I have said I have both SS and tube amps and love them both. It is funny how when I record I use my tubes and when I play out I go with my SS amps and the looks my bandmates and also the folks I work with give me. The SS sounds greta and can take a beating...my tubes I baby because they are rather delicate in comparison.
