I am looking at buying a new amp. I have about $300 to spend on one. Any suggestions?

You could probably find a used Blues Junior somewhere for around $300 bucks. That would get you into some tubes.

But the Super Champ XD gets you a five-year warranty, new tubes (not old, blue-gassers) a line out, an ext spkr out, modeling and bookoo EFX, and the same wattage. And 6V6 tubes which are so way cooler than boring old EL84s. All for $299.

If you've been playing solid state, like I did for years and years, find the extra $100 and pick up a Blues Junior. It's responsive. I mean, you dial it in and it changes and it can respond and crackle with the energy from your guitar. It's a very different musical instrument than a solid state amp. The downside is that since it's all tube with no solid state pre-amp it doesn't have a line out or the modeling and so forth like Maruuk is talking about you can get from a new one coming out soon. The one Maruuk is talking about isn't in stores yet I don't think. Definitely, don't buy anything solid state, or even the hybrid solid-tube that Fender's coming up with now which does sound very cool, without playing a Blues Junior. It's a great, versatile little combo that opens up a new understanding about how the amp is really part of the musical instrument.

Point being, check em both out. Assuming the 12AX7 is used in the preamp gain stage, the SCXD would be a true all-tube amp structure with an additional modeling pre-amp stage similar to just adding a pedal in front of your BJ.

A hybrid amp is one with an all-solid state preamp.

The SCXDs should be in stores next month, according to Fender.

Hell, just pop another $300 bucks and get a Hot Rod Deluxe, it'll have everything you could possibly need.

Including an extra 25 pounds to lug and the aforementioned $300 hit to your wallet, and excluding a line out and modeling and EFX and 6V6s. Not to mention the inability to soak the power stage without blowing a couple walls down.

Maybe we should ask him just exactly what it is that he wants in an amp?
