I got the SCXD because of the tube amp part--the emulations were sort of icing. I'm hoping there's some way to scrape the icing off the sound so that I get only what the tube amp is delivering. Can this be done or do I have to get like a Pro Junior or something? Does the clean setting do it, or is it just another Blackface emulation? Thanks for your help.

HI, the preamp is all solid state on your champ, only the power amp section is tube, much like the Music Man amps built in the mid '70s. If you want an all tube amp, then look at something else. This guy is what he is. Sorry I couldn't give more positive advise. ART

Hi Art,

That's what I figured, but hope springs eternal. I guess that's why a Pro Junior costs more. Thanks for your help!

solid state preamp? I have the Vibro Champ XD, the SCXD's lil brother amp, and both the preamp and power amp are tube. there is though, digital processing before the pre and power amps. however, both are Tube.

Yes Zep, You are quite right about the Vibro Champ. A 12Ax7 and a 6V6 tube compliment. the classic single ended classA design. But Fphoppe has the Super Champ XD, a different design with a 12AX7 phase inverter and two 6V6 power tubes, for the tube compliment. The schematics are available on this site, and you sure got me to go back and check them. Zep welcome to the forum! I'm an old guy, me and mistakes are old friends, so feel free to call me out on any of my opinions or advise. How do you like that Vibro Champ? I had an old one for awhile, great amps. ART

well i certainly need to do my homework prior to posting. lol. thankfully i have a good education on schematics and i definitely see what you mean between the two. I ponder though why they would take essentially the same amp and make such a change in the larger version of it.

However, here is a separate set of questions. 1. is there a simple/nondestructive way to cut the speaker off and or convert that signal to then be sent to headphones. i.e. a dummy load on it and use the line out (from what i have seen, the line out is simply only the digi processed sound as opposed to that coming after the tubes) or is there a way to use the actual speaker out with a set of headphones, perhaps after running it through a potentiometer or something similar as to keep it from being too loud.

kinda hard to exactly say what i mean in simple terms, but hopefully you understand what i mean.

2. biasing the vibro, easy, hard? and is there an ability to swap out the power amp tube for perhaps the EL84 which i have read is fine. and realistically speaking will there even be a noticable difference in sound. I am an electronics tweaker and love to tweak out a good sound or better performance, and based on my being in the Marines im limited to how loud and how big i can go, so for now i would like to safely experiment with what i do have.

Hey Zep, why don't you post a new topic for these questions, just to avoid any amp confusion? These are great questions for other Vib owners and the folks that are familiar with the situation. You know what I mean? I can tell you that your amp is cathode biased. So you can try any 6V6 you want to try without the need to rebias. The EL84 uses a 9-pin socket, the 6V6 uses an 8-pin socket. So that would take quite a bit of work to convert. The sound difference would be quite a change. The plug-in converters I've seen are designed for grid biased amps. But maybe there are other units to be had. ART
