Well, I was able to score a new Celestion G10 Vintage yesterday at the Arlington guitar show for even less money than a Ragin Cajun, and I couldn't be happier with it!

I had dismissed getting one because they are so expensive, so I was surprised to find one at the show...much less at a smokin' price. :D

It sounds great, and has a much clearer bottom end. This is going to turn out to be a really fun amp.

There you go. Glad you like it. It really thumps on the clean Blackface channel and breaks up ok. I think the breakup will improve over time.

Isn't the G10 a 60 watt speaker? I was under the impression that it's not a good idea to use a speker with a higher wattage rating than your amp.

It doesn't hurt anything at all. It's just not pushing the speaker as hard as it's capable of.

I actually prefer a bit of a safety margin, so that cranking the amp up doesn't hurt the speaker.

Also, more powerful speakers generally have larger magnets and voice coils, which I personally like, but they also tend towards a better efficiency...so that you end up with more volume and frequency responses.

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure? I've heard from a number of different sources over the years that it's not OK. I don't really remember why, something about forcing the amp to work harder than is safe, and that it could damage the amp.

Just to clarify my Celestion G10 Greenback is rated at 30W. It is also listed at 30W power rating on Celestion's site.

You're more likely to damage a speaker than the amp when using higher wattages than the amplifier is capable of. I learned this the hard way when I was into high end stereo some years ago. I took a few out. It's actually safer to use a lower wattage speaker than your amp is rated for than vise versa.

I was told by the salesman at GC that the scxd was capable to run a 4 speaker cabinet. Basicly using it for a head. Now I'm only using it with a 1x12 cab with a high wattage speaker. Basicly to get more bottom end. I've also read how other people on this forum are doing the same thing. I never really play the amp at a high volume but if I ever choose to I don't want to put the speaker at risk.

It is my understanding it is more important to make sure you are using an 8 ohm rated speaker, which the Cajun and Greenback G10 are available in. Using a 30W to 60W speaker should not be a problem for a 15 watt amp.

You are correct...it is the ohms that need to match up...you could use speakers that are rated at 60W with no issue.

I sure hope the info is correct that using a higher wattage speaker than my amp is rated for will not do harm. I play a Cyber Twin SE rated at 65 watts per channel and did not like the stock speakers so I built a couple of 1x12 boxes and loaded them with Eminence Delta Pro 12A's rated at 400 watts each. They are both 8 ohm so the impedence is matched at least. Eminence quit making the Modeling 12 so any speaker recommendations ya'll can give is greatly appreciated. I only used the Delta's because they have a relative neutral voicing.

Thank you Mike, I did a little research before installing these monsters and found several custom cabinet builders use them because they do not color the tone. I really would like to use a guitar speaker instead of a pro audio but the choices are so vast especially with Eminence. The Delta's do not do especially well with really high gain application but lower gain over drive they rock.
Cyber Twin SE
Deluxe 85
Highway 1 Strat (single SD Custom 5)
American Std. Strat (Lace Hot Gold Set)
Gibson '99 LP DC
Hamer SATF (Burst Bucker Pro Bridge)
Hamer SATFW (JB Bridge)
Boat load of modified Tursers
Thanks again,
Rudy
