I am looking to purchase an amp to use at home with an American Standard Stratocaster. I am hoping to purchase an amp that will sound great clean as well as distorted at lower volumes which will be more comfortable at home. I will be playing Blues and Classic Rock.

I am considering the Blues Jr. NOS and the Super Champ XD. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on which of these would be the best choice.

Also, would the 65 Deluxe Reverb or 65 Princeton Reverb work for in home use. I fear that these amps would have to be turned up too loud to get good distortion.

This is very confusing, please help.

Hello Patrick0815,

Blues Jr or Super Champ?

Well the NOS BJ is my #1 Amp I like it a lot,
you got reverb and thats about it. It has it's own tone,
and it'll never get glassy cleans.

I have the super champs little brother, Vibro Champ
Much better cleans along with a pile of other
bells and whistles to have fun with plus the Super
has channel switching w/footpedal and effects on off
controlled by the pedal. It's also more than 1/2 the
cost of a NOS Blues Jr.

That what I know.

Cheers.

I've tried a few amps for home use over the last few weeks. Here's my unprofessional take on things. Everything bought on eBay, so I never lost any money buying and selling them again.

Got a VM deluxe... loved it, but too loud.
Got a Vibro Champ... nice clean, but a little thin with that 8" speaker, didn't sound happy (don't know why) through a 1x12... also too loud (at home, 5 watts is LOUD... 1 watt is LOUD!)
Got a SCXD... nice speaker, but even better thru' the 1x12 (Hot Rod enclosure)... I'd say, for the clean channel alone, this was a better option than the BJ (which I also used to own) and you've got all the gizmo voices etc... but also, you guessed it... too loud.

If you go for a DRRI (which I like the look of too)... don't base your decision on volume, because they are all too loud.

To me, all of these amps sounded lousy at low volume... they need to be driven. My conclusion is there's no such thing as a bedroom amp... low volume and electric guitars? It just doesn't work.

Having said all that... I bought a THD attenuator (goes between the amp and the speaker... and inspite of what some people will say, it does not suck tone – at least to my ears anyway) and the SCXD is now wonderful – I get the full 'POWER' of the amp, but at reduced volume. I'd be happy to get a DRRI or the VM again, now I've got the attenuator.

Hope I didn't bore you, but it's the dilemma I went through. Hope it helps.

15 watts is LOUD, even too loud for practical use depending on your house situation. If you are really after a tube amp I would suggest to stay with 5 watts. Just a few names to throw out there, Ulbrick Fire Bottle, Blackstar HT-5, or a little less expensive Bugera V5

Egnater Rebel 20.
it will operate at anything from 1-watt to 20-watts.
