I have a 2001 '65 Twin Reverb. Here's the problem:

- power and standy "on" cold
- no instruments plugged in
- crackles with loud pops
- volume 1-3 (if I lower the volume the pops and crackles are "quieter")
- if reverb is engaged sounds like unit is being "moved aggressively"
- terminates with a loud pop and then it's quiet without issue
- jewel lite flickers during popping
- lasts for approximately a minute
- after warm-up, if I crank the volume (>6) pops/crackles are very distant

I replaced the original Groove tubes with JJ's only recently. I did not notice this noise until after replacing the tubes. I returned the original GT's and the problem persists. I suspect that I simply did not notice this popping/crackling because I tend to turn on the amp and leave it on standby while I set up pedals and such. I have a '79 Twin that by comparison is dead quiet on the warm-up. I'm concerned that this will eventually cause permanent damage.

Try cleaning the pins of the tubes really well. Use electrical contact cleaner.

Ahh Bert, Hope the socket cleaning took care of the arcing! If not, you'll need a few "known good" pre amp tubes. Since you have the other Twin Reverb, that will help for subbing tubes. I will offer a few ideas, if needed, to help isolate the problem, OK? With each tube R&R the amp must be shut "off." Remove V6( If crackling is not present replace V6 with" good" tube. Remove V1,V4,&V5( if crackling persists ) We're looking at the components associated with the phase inverter. If all is well, we know the Power amp section is fine. I'm going to stop at this point and check your future post. ART

I purchased some top of the line electrical contact cleaner and carefully cleaned and treated the pins on each tube. The amp is now quiet and the sound is apparently improved. Thanks for the recommendations guys :D

Yup. When I got my JJ's from Eurotubes on their website they're like "CLEAN THE PINS" and even when you get the package it's got instructions that say "CLEAN THE PINS". Even though they're brand new still clean them.

Do they make cleaner for that, or do I keep using rubbing alcohol? :)
