I just got a THD Hotplate from a nice guy on eBay and I'm so excited I thought I'd give you a first impression.

I've got an American Deluxe Ash Strat plugged into a Super Champ XD running into a Hot Rod 1x12 enclosure.

So, first impression is WOWEEEE!!!!!! My wife is out and I have no neighbors to worry about and I'm playing in a small room at loud-but-comfortable volume... the amp is transformed. I mean I actually hear the amp now – cranking the clean channel between 7 and 10 into a beautiful creamy distortion, no need for a pedal. I was, up until now, disappointed with the SCXD through the cab, but with this thing the whole scenario has changed and the cab works really well with the amp.

As for sucking tone from the amp... I don't think so; it has a couple of switches on the front which alter brightness (not got to grips with these yet), but the tone is wonderful. It's also silent in operation and feels reassuring heavy and well built.

Anyway, I'm off to play. Should be sweeping leaves, but I'm sure she'll forgive me!

That's cool that you havn't lost any tone. I've read a few reviews of other attenuators that people say seem to lose a lot of tone when used.

Tone is a very subjective thing. All the attenuators I've tried seemed to change the sound of the amp in a negative way including the . But that's just me not you. Maybe it was my imagination, I don't know, but I always sent them back. I used mine with my Twin not a Super Champ so YMMV. Personally I think built-in power soak controls and the variable wattage control on my Egnater work a lot better I guess because it's designed into the amp.

I'm glad you like yours and it works for you. That's really all that counts.

I'd just hate anyone to dismiss the THD (as I was tempted to do) simply on the basis of blanket anti-attenuator prejudice.

Maybe I don't have great ears, but there must be an awful lot of people out there for whom, like me, any tonal changes with the THD (if they exist) would be so imperceptible as to being meaningless.

Nah not anti-attenuator, just desperately looking for one I liked.

http://www.ultimateattenuator.com/ Very pricy but it gets raves on all the Marshall forums for imperceptible coloring. YMMV. 8) MIke
