Hi guys,
I'm looking to upgrade my ootb 65 drri. Has anyone done any mods to their drri amp and if so, what? As for normal upgrades i'm thinking of nos or jj tubes and would like to swap out the speaker for something that would give me more a neil young tone. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Lank

The DRRI should have a Jensen® C-12K in it which is quite a good speaker.

It also has 9 tubes in it, going NOS on all of them will cost a fair bit,
JJ are more cost effective, agree anythings better than the GT's it probably came with.

Pete,
I'll check out the JJ's for sure. How about EHX tubes as well? They seem to be a cost effective choice as well.

Thanks,
Lank

PS the Jensen is a pretty good speaker but I just feel the DRRI can be a little too bright at times.

The Jensen speaker is awesome, hang on and do the tubes first. I went with the "Blues Forever" tube set from Torres Engineering. They are a matched set, meaning you don't have to bias them yourself! The full 9 kit set costs $160, but I LOVE them for real blues tone.

FYI - Torres shipped like the next day. But had one bad tube, and took them about 2 weeks to get me a replacement? But I just used the GT until it came. Still, well worth the wait.

I've had my DRRI for about a year now. Not one mod yet. I swear it sounds better every time I plug into it. I'm in the Navy, and don''t want to lug it on the ship with me. When I go away for months at a time, one of the first things I want to do is plug into my amp when I get home. It's really a fantastic amp the way it is. I've been thinking about a tube upgrade, but it's great the way it is. Thought about a Celestion Gold too. Honestly though, it's a great amp stock.

If you want a Neil Young tone try a Deluxe 5e3 Tweed. You can either get a kit or find one already built on EBay or buy the overpriced Fender 57 Deluxe.

Agreed. I've had my eye on a 5E3 for a little while now. Great amp! The mission amp kit appears to be outstanding, and has great reviews. If I made more money, I'd get the Fender '57 Deluxe RI for sure.

I was going to pull the trigger on the Mission 5e3 kit, but bought an Egnater instead. It was a little more flexible for my needs. I still may do it though. 5e3 Tweeds are awesome.

I love my DRRI. The clean tone, and the OD tones with my pedals are just amazing. Can't be beat. But, I just can't find a pedal I like in the mid to high gain realm, so I'm thinking about getting a channel switching amp with an FX loop. I've been looking at the Mesa/Boogie Lonestar Special. How much gain does the Egnator Rebel 20 have? I want a low wattage all tube/high-end amp. The Egnator would be soooooo much cheaper than the Mesa Lonestar Special.

To me it seems to have a ton of gain. I know a lot of metal guys have been using Egnater. You can go to Egnater's site and ask questions or go to http://www.rig-talk.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=26
and ask there. I'm not a metal guy. It has way more gain than I need.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm not a metal guy either, but sometimes I like those saturated, liquid single notes for soloing, when I get a wild hair... :D

Does anyone use the vibrato on their DRRI? I don't, but am wondering why there's a ticking/oscillating sound coming from it. Any help will be appreciated.

I use my vibrato once in a while. Never heard any ticking or oscillating sound coming from it. Maybe the tube driving it is having some issues. In any case, it's not normal.

Ian, how's it going with the tonequest? You're playing a lively humbucker guitar, right? I've read that his pickups were old Firebirds, so microphonic you could talk into them. If you're into Mr. Young's music, you know it's more about heart, hands, and attitude than equipment. Keep Pickin' ! ART
