Supro, I agree.I recently took it in to have it checked out and I ended up having it retubed and rebiased.(the previous owner had bias pots installed apparently). It came to me with jan phillips wgbs and I had them put the same thing back in.It sounds quite a bit better actually and it sounded great before.I also have a 75 Super reverb that I bought on ebay that needs to be checked out.It doesnt look like the caps were ever changed, so i am gonna have a cap job done and a retube. The tubes it came with from what I can tell are Fender labeled Groove Tubes .I know I can do better.Any recommendations? I hear good things about JJs.

I don't gig with mine, but I wouldn't be afraid to. I play alot and I play it loud. I have owned 2 of them and had no trouble from either one. I sold one when I bought my Vibro King Custom. I missed it after awhile and got another. Wouldn't want to part with either one.

I gig extensively with my Hot Rod DeVille 410 and have had it years, never a problem, JJ 6L6's and a mix of EH and Mesa 12AX7's. Sounds great and I love the clean.

I guess these days, like anything so mass produced, it's luck of the draw. If the draw aint lucky then it's a simple case of maintaining it. Just get rid if it's costing too much.

Randy1,how do you like your Vibro King CS? I've never played one but I've seen and heard Pete T. using several.

I absolutely love it. The clarity of the notes is just unreal. It is extremely loud, and the sweetspot for the tubes is at about 4 on the volume knob. I have never played another amp with the picking dynamics this amp has. When you dig in with the pick you get this great natural overdrive. Seldom will you ever get a shrill sounding note whether you are playing hard or soft. I never played one before I saw this one. I found it new in a guitar store and the owner had it on display longer than he wanted. He cut me a once in a lifetime deal and I bought it. So far I have never seen another one in a store.

You're welcome fhopkins. I wish everyone could get a chance to play one, but it seems like there are not many out there in the stores to try out.

I really don't have a lot to say.......except I've had a Hot Rod Deluxe for several years, and I've had no problems. I'm still happy with it. Hopefully it will remain that way.

Are CS amps similar to CS guitars in that only CS dealers can carry them? Other than one heavily used CS '57 Deluxe Reissue, I've never seen one in a store that didn't deal in CS gear...

Hi Vulkan, I know the dealer who had mine does not stock custom shop guitars. A Fender rep was there the day I bought it and he never said the CS amps were only available at certain dealers. I have wondered if the price has anything to do with stores stocking them, especially with the more recent pricing.

I dont understand this, "Luck of the draw" stuff, surely the same guys in some factory in mexico who builds them wouldnt make much of a variation in the quality.

I have to say i was pretty sure my deville was the bee's knee's for a while since its pretty good sounding (for the price) and never broke during gigs, but i recently bought a 65' twin and damn, i have to agree with you supro and slapchop, the hand wired stuff is really good stuff, but i bi-amp them together so i get best of both and maybe if the deville does bum out on me ive still got a twin there.

Be sure to wear earplugs my friend or you'll wind up like me.

It is a crap shoot My HRDlx didn't hold up at all even to light gigging. Fender has to be aware of the problems but still plays the percentages.
I think they hope they won't leave the house and are used lightly. Notice they lowered the prices on them. Sheer volume does not make a great amp. I think they sound like crap in stock form when you crank them. They need a tube change at minimum.

My 76 Twin holds up to all kinds of abuse without even a hiccup. I had an old VCR that has a thicker board than my HRDlx. Come to think of it, my 35 year old Pignose that never died has a thicker board too LOL and I use it all the time.

They are built on an automated assembly line, PCB's are probably wave soldered.
Luck of the draw comes from getting one with good solid solder joints or weak joints.

The thin pcb, components used, and design mean it is only time until a solder trace cracks from thermal expansion/contraction or contact stress from yanking on a guitar cord plugged into in.

I still have mine, trying to get a good price from the store I bought it from as a trade on a new amp. They don't seem to want it back with the amounts they have been offering.
They are selling the BD's for almost 1100$cdn new, and they are offering less than 500$ for it as a trade after only a year.

Something I did not expect the hot-rods apparently do not hold their value like the black/silver face amps.

I was offered something like $275 for mine in mint condition and 6 months left on the warranty. I sold it for $450 on Craigslist. No thay don't want them back. I don't blame them either. My Egnater has been rock solid for the past 2 months so far. It's incredible.

peterp, a retailer will almost never offer you more than 50% of a unit's value to the market. If they can sell it for $1K, they'll give you $500. That's just the nature of trading in.

You're always better off to sell the piece yourself for cash.
