A question from a complete noob: So, I picked up a couple of those Danelectro Cool Cat pedals for super cheap recently and tried them with my Super Champ XD. One, a vibe pedal, seems to work ok. But the transparent overdrive doesn't seem to work well with the Super Champ at all. Am I doing something wrong? Should I not even use pedals with this amp, as it doesn't have an effects loop and has all the digital built-in effects? Words of wisdom appreciated.

I find exactly the same thing, drives and compressors dont work well with that amp. The input seems to overload very easily and give a dull muffled sound. Your far better off to use the amps gain, keep the onboard effects to a minimum, maybe just a splattering of reverb, chorus, trem or phase and use a pedal or two. For instance if you like the reverb on the amp but need delay too, use a delay pedal.

I've had just the opposite experience. This is my gigging amp, Super Champ XD, and I use 2 Cool Cat pedals, Drive and Distortion, and they both sound great. I also have a Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde and I think the Cool Cat pedals sound just as good if not better. I also use a wide variey of guitars and they all sound great with the pedal / amp combination. Turn the drive down and tinker with your tone settings. You should be able to get a great sound.

The fact of the matter is that a whole host of factors contribute to how a certain pedal sounds, not least of which is the guitar and amp combination. These are further affected by how you set the controls on each of the three main parts of your tone. It is my general experience, however, that pedals sound best when paired with a basic amp; amps with a lot of digital gadgetry don't necessarily "like" them as much. Your best bet is to fiddle around a lot. If you're using a drive pedal, keep the amp set relatively clean and then use the pedal to overdrive the preamp.

Hello Jfire,

Firstly welcome to this forum.

I only have 1 pedal
a Danelectro corned beef reverb.
It works great with my Vibro Champ XD.
Put the reverb whereever you want.

Cheers.

I've come to the conclusion (tonight, by coincidence)) that I don't really like any of the amp's own drive voices. My Bad Monkey, on the clean channel, allows me to dial in just the tones I want, not what the amp wants me to want.

jgauker,

Can you give me an idea of the setting you use with your respective Cool Cats? That might help me out, or give me a starting point toward making mine sound good with the Super Champ. I play a Strat, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for the help all!

I have a PS to my last post.

I was a bit frustrated with my SCXD because at low volume I just couldn't get 'the sound' I was after. Well, I just got a THD attenuator and boy the amp has come alive. I can crank it up to volume 7 on the clean and get all the lovely creamy tone the amp was designed to dish out, but at low volume. It doesn't need a pedal and I don't need all the overdriven voices. The THD is expensive, but worth every penny.

(I've got the SCXD/THD going into a 1x12 Hot Rod enclosure.)
