just discovered this forum and am hoping to get some feedback on some questions i have. I recently started playing in a rock cover band and have been using my Pro Jr and HSS AM. DLX Strat through a chain of 6 BOSS pedals for reverb, chorus, 2 different types of distiortion, compression, and tuner. and it sounds great at home. I love the sound and simplicity of the PJ and want to transport that on stage. my main concern was that micing the amp would yield little to no low end. A Crate 100w half stack was available and i played through that at one rehearsal; volume and low end were there, but tone was bland and flat no matter how i messed with the EQ. after that, i brought my PJ back and ran it through the 412 cab and it was better, though not best. I was looking at the Deville or something as possible replacements but dont want to spend that much when the PJ already sounds great to me. I've seen the hotrod cabs available as well, though those are 112, that didnt seem like much of an imporvement over the 110 of the amp itself.

So.. after that rant, my questions are,
what cab would be best, if any, for club use and full rehearsals?
would a tube change help get a bit more bottom end tone for clean and distorted rhythm sound? (i dont play much lead)
my other concern/question, ive heard that the amp will have natural overdrive/distortion and high volumes, is there any way to curb that without sacrificing volume? I'd rather use my pedals for distortion.

I ran my PJ onstage by itself for ages. It's fine for stage work, although I wound up getting a bigger HRDX simply because I wanted more stage volume.

The trick, I think, is mic placement. If you use something designed for instruments and amps -- the Shure SM57 is the obvious choice here -- and place it in various places on grille-cloth so as to pick up various sound balances coming off the cone, you should have lots of success. If you like the sound of the PJ in your bedroom, it stands to reason that you should like it onstage; consequently, I believe any problems you might have are coming from bad mics, poor mic'ing technique, or massive tone suck from your pedalboard.

With a PJ? Not on your life. The thing starts to really sound good at about 4 or 5 -- depending on the amp -- and, at that point, is already breaking up. By the time most of them hit 6, they're running hot and pumping out a great, loose, slightly overdriven sound. If you want loud and clean, the PJ is not the amp for you; if, however, you want the best sounding small Fender amp around, then it most certainly is for you.

What I'd do is set your dirt boxes up so that they act as boosers (full volume, no gain). This will deliver a hotter signal to the amp which will cause the tubes to saturate more and -- yes, it's true -- sound even better.
