Well, the Fender Super Champ XD is a good starter amp :

The Pro Jr is a bit more powerful and doesn't have the digital
effects, but still maybe worth trying?

Yeah, I would agree with the Super Champ XD choice. You'll get a bunch of effects and be able to crank it up at home. If you decide to jam with some folks, the amp has a line out to run into a PA(a guitar cable). As for guitar cables, Mogami is fine, but there are plenty of quality cables. I play a Strat and suggest a straight end for the guitar and a 90degree for the amp. ART

I just replaced all my old cords with George L's .255's. I like them a lot. They seemed to add a touch more bottom end to my Strat while still keeping the clarity of the rest of my signal. YMMV For an amp, I'd look for a Silver Face 70's Champ Amp. They can be had for the same price of the lower end new Fender amps. I've seen plenty under $400. Very cool amps. Sometimes I run mine through a 2x10 cab. My 74 has been bulletproof. Easy to repair if needed and IMHO are more reliable and sound much better than the new throw away Champs. Not that the new ones sound bad, I just prefer the older ones. Vox also has some new slick stuff out as well as Blackstar.

Orange Amps made a 5watt amp with one EL84 and a 12AX7. That amp was hand wired and might be a good choice(good build quality). The past few years I've been making guitar & speaker cables using Excellines and GHS plugs, but you can get complete cords(ProCo Excellines). The George L's are very good low-loss cables(that's what I use between the reverb unit and amp). They are a little stiff for stage use, but otherwise a good choice. ART
