I was at a club the other night and a guy told me he had a Fender amp he wanted to sell. He indicated it was a Super Amp with 4x10 inch speakers and was made in the 90's. He said it was just like a Super Reverb and he wanted $500 for it. That sounds like a great deal but I'm not familiar with this amp, it's sound, or reliability. I do like the Super Reverb but the 90's weren't great years for Fender amps were they? Any thoughts on this amp or the asking price.

^Some descent info on that site. As for value, $500 doesn't sound too bad, depends what condition it was in. I don't believe the 90s were a bad time for Fender Amps, at least I never heard anything like that so as far as I know it's fiction.

edit: Make sure you play it before buying it, ask what tubes are in when were they changed, ask if any service needed to be done, etc...

I had a 90's Super 60 tube amp. One of the circuit boards went and I was S.O.L. because you can't get those boards anymore. Like the other reply, make sure it works to you specifications. Make sure everything works at low and high volume.

I agree with Capo about the late 80's- 90's being fine enough years for the new Fender company. As far as I know, they were trying to tap into the best of the pre CBS era heritage and implementing it into the insruments and amps. The circuits are built on printed circuit boards connected with ribbon wire harnesses, which is the norm for that level of equipment. The only issue I had with those amps is the tube sockets being board mounted. Now, the Super you're thinking about may have been changed to chassis mounts. I had two earlier red knob series amps(Champ 12 for 3yrs, Super 60 for 2yrs.) and the only problem was the input jack on the Champ. It was plastic and it was my fault. I replaced it and as far as I know it's still working on a band stage in Wisconsin, where a guy uses two of them. If you can get the guy to let you take it home and play it for three hours or four hours, and check everything out, then $500 would be fair($450 even better). What I mean is to play the amp for 30 min, leave it on standby a while, play 30min, and so on..... Just to find out if the amp can take the heat(no pun intended). A 10min test drive with someone looking over your shoulder doesn't cut it. You know what I mean? Good Luck ART

I've seen these amps on the internet. They only have one input.

There's another Pro-Tube amp called the Concert. I would like to know what's the difference in this and the Super amp.

The Pro Tube Super is identical to the Concert with the exception of speakers and cab size (And I believe the Concert has reverb too). >_>

Thanks for the input on this amp. I did play it and elected to pass. The sound quality wasn't great and the volume level modulated up and then down after briefly playing. I guess a possible tube issue. Which brings up a question, do any of you ever buy amps off of ebay? The cosmetics looked fine but the amp had some kind of problem. It would seem impossible to properly evaluate a used amp in a long distance purchase.
