Well i did some research on this and a fella called shred told me that the best combination of tubes is this:

V1- Sylvania 12ax7 short-plate
V2- GE 12ax7a long-plate
V3- RCA 7025

and winged =C=s for the power valves

It tames the trebles and gives you some nice thicker tones.

That's an A+ setup indeed. In fact I see some really cool Syalvanias on ebay right now. There's a 6681 that you don't run across very often. They're great V1 tubes for any amp. Saw a couple of 1948 short-plates from Fantastic Tubes on there as well. I've bought tubes from them in the past, and they were always perfect. They're true pros. They get my recommendation any day. If I had the money, I'd be snagging those 2 today.

The 2-1948's and a GE LP in V2, and you'd be good to go if you're into warmth and clarity. Keep in mind that RCAs have a distinctive gainy sound. A Sylvania SP will have more clarity and breakup later. It would be better for the clean channel. The RCA 7025 gives the distortion channel a thicker more powerful gain sound. Breaks up earlier and has a thick bass punch. I personally use an RCA 7025 for the gain characteristic in the distorted channel and it's quiet nature. But that gain characteristic also finds it's way into the clean channel a little (which I happen to not mind at all). The GE LP in V2 is really the key to giving a Fender a very rich, clear, warm bass property. Neither the RCA or the Sylvania will fight against that characteristic, so you will have more bass tones to help counteract the nasty highs that Fenders can a lot of times possess. It just becomes a taste in breakup value at that point.

Like 63 Supro mentioned, tone is subjective. Everyone has a different perspective of "tone". So these are my experiences with what I set out to achieve with my HRDV concerning tone. There is no such thing as the best tube setup. Only an individual's favorite. I'd be interested in hearing those 1948 tubes in my amp. If my imagination serves me well based on my experiences with Sylvanias, it would be killer.

One thing that is not subjective is whether modern preamp tubes compare to NOS tubes. They do not. NOS preamp tubes are far above what modern tubes are in quality and sound. That is a fact that's not arguable. So you would be wise to do some research and follow the path of the NOS rout if you really want your amp to sound the best it can.

I know this thread is sort of old, but I found it and thought I would weigh in.

I've had my 4x10" HRD for 6 years and I must say that I wasn't in love with the sound initially. I bought it because I got a really good deal on it and wanted a tube amp to play around with.

I replace all three of the pre-amp tubes early on with Groove Tubes 12AX7-M Mullard reissues and I have had really good luck with those, though some have had reliability issues with those tubes. It's probably about time for me to replace those now.

I, too, went with the JJ 6L6's which I biased a little cold. I have more headroom, the bass is distortion free and overall the amp sounds less tinny and much clearer. I think re-tubing this amp is a must. It sounds so much better than it did with the crappy groove tubes it came with.

JJ's are a little darker sounding to my damaged ears. I didn't need a tone of headroom so I biased my JJ's between 82-85Mv on my now EX HRDlx. I felt tone cheated when I originally biased them at 72Mv. But like I said, tone is very subjective. It all depends on what gets plugged into it too.
