I have a Hot-Rod DeVille 410, JJ 6L6GC's for the big boys and a combination of Mesa and EH 12AX7's to taste for the pre-amp.

Class!

JJ's and Jan Philips tubes here.

But if you are going to start replacing all the tubes, speakers and maybe making mods I suggest the best mod might be to sell it and by an amp that sounds the way you want it too in the first place.

Been the tube/speaker/mods route and after all the expenses the amp still sounds pretty much the same as it always did.
The sound does change a bit but not enough to justify all the costs involved.

+1 It makes no sense. Save you money and in the mean time try tons of amps. (cough, cough Egnater)

Don't own one of these amps, but have had a couple of guys sit in with our blues band, using them. They do cut through. I think it's the nature of four tens coupled to a kind of high gain pre amp and power section, that cause it to be so focused. Having said that, I would consider experimenting with a number of pre amp tubes in the V1&V2 positions: 12AU7, 12AY7, 12AT7, 5751. I might try some 5881's for power, and 12AT7 or 5751 for the phase inverter. As for the speakers I'd check out the Weber selection(you can trust their discription). I have a 10F150 in a
2X10 '68 Bassman combo that I modded to be a verastile guitar amp and it's great. While you're there check out the devices, Ted Weber designed, to tame the more beastial amps. Good Luck! ART

tubes
v1 - 5751 Jan Philips
v2 - 12ax7 JJ
v3 - 12at7 currently a RCA

power tubes are JJ's

Speakers - amp is the 12 inch speaker version and have Celeston Vintage 30.
Was/am considering trying an Eminence Swamp Thang in the mix it is supposed to have a heavier low end.
But don't really want to spend any more cash on this amp.

Best tube reviews out there currently are for the SED winged "c" 6l6's and the TAD short bottle 6l6's. These would probably give you a boost in volume depending on how they are biased and how old your current tubes are.
Speakers would give you a boost in volume only if the sensitivity is greater than that of your current speakers. Sounds like your more interested in power/volume boost than tone coloration. So my two cents are keep your amp and experiment. Good luck
Hope this helps.

You really won't get a boost in volume if the amp is built for 6L6's. Headroom may change, typically 6L6's put out around 19 watts but could be little higher depending on the plate voltage.

A 40 or 60 watt amp properly biased will still be 40 or 60 watts, but, moving more air with either more efficient speakers or an extension cabinet will make the amp appear louder making it sound like a volume boost.

I agree 100%, but what if the current tubes he has are old and worn? Would'nt that affect the volume? I've noticed that the older my tubes get the less volume they produce. Would it be possible that new tubes would help bring back some loss of volume due to degraded tubes?

Usually I notice more of a loss of tone more than volume. It's easy to confuse more usable headroom with volume increase too. As tubes get weak, all sorts of things can happen. I usually would see failure before volume drop. That's just been my experience though. I guess it depends on how hard you push the amp. I've only ever pretty much used tubes amps except for a Pignose and a SS Guild Four for the past 40 years. Current production JJ's, Tung Sol and JAN Phillips as well as Winged C's have worked well for me over the years.

I'm not a big fan of the Blues Deville or any HRD Series amp, I prefer the Bassman RI over the Deville. For me the breakup seems more natural and is much better built. But whatever works for you is great.

Everyone perceives volume differently. The loss of volume I was noticing for me was a loss of my hearing. I'm glad I'm using a lower wattage amp now. It seems to not aggravate my Tinnitus as much as my Twin. I can do everything I want now with my Egnater Rebel. I may sell my Twin. That's how happy I am with the Egnater.

Tone is so subjective. The best thing to do is try different manufacturers and see what you like and what's reliable. Just be sure to properly bias the amp for good tube life.

Did I miss something? Zokair, I thought you wanted to mellow out this amp a little bit, but keep enough oomph for gigging. ART

im hoping to improve the inherent weaknesses of this amp by tweeking the tubes and replacing the speakers for ones with bigger magnets and will do this after i get supermoto wheels for my bike, tune up my blazer, get my septic tank sucked out, furnace serviced, pool lines blown-out for winter,...as you see- im in no hurry to change out stuff in my amp yet -but will after the dust settles .... :P
