Is it possible, I wonder, to use the "preamp" out of my HRDx to run a tuner -- as opposed to placing it in front of my other pedals before the input? What I'd do is simply run a cable from the "preamp out" to the tuner's input and, when I needed to tune, step on the box. Or would it be necessary to connect the tuner's output to the "power amp in" on my amp?

Basically, does the effects loop need to have both jacks filled to be used safely?

You cant just plug in a tuner from your preamp and leave it at that im afraid.

You have to complete the circuit for it all to work however, you could either:

A) Get a true bypass tuner so that it wont affect tone
B) Get a True Bypass switcher so that you can take anything in the loop of the switcher out completely (Although that would be a waste if you were just using a tuner)
C) Just get one of those tuners you put on your headstock that work off vibrations, they're pretty good for gigs and save you carrying gear around.

In my opinion unless your going to use any other pedals, options A and B are just wasteful, go for C.

If you do want to use more pedals then go for B
