Hello vanillagrilla94,

I know you specified a tube amp - but, for the situation you described, I would suggest a solid state amp. An example in the Fender brand would be one of the 100 watt combos with 2x12s.

I saw your other thread asking about the Blues Junior. I had one. It was the only amp, of the many that I have had, that I considered to be a POS. It was problems from the start. I know others will feel threatened by this and feel like they need to defend the amp  . So, I suggest you read up - a lot - about this amp before buying one. There are many posts in this forum and other guitar forums about the Blues Junior. Be for-warned. As for will it do cleans loud enough to get over drums? - I had a hard time getting clean sounds from mine at any volume, let alone at the high volume needed to get over drums.

If you just HAVE TO HAVE an amp with tubes in it - the only way I know to stay within any sane budget (your $400 figure would be on the high side for my budget too :D ) - is to either buy a small one, that will do cleans, and mic it - or - search the used market. If you go the used route - be careful - there's a lot of used tube amps being sold because the present owner has problems with it, or has had problems with it. (a problem child - so to speak) Some people see nothing wrong in selling a piece of equipment that has problems. With a new amp, at least there is a warranty - for whatever that's worth.

(solid state amps get to looking very appealing sometimes  )

Good Luck :?

I dount your gonna find one that will do cleans at that price man.

I would think that your prob gonna need at least 30watts to get cleans at higher volumes if not more.

Vox AC 30, Fender Deluxe 40w or the Orange Rocker 30.

the Fender is the best value, i was playing one at the weekend and had enough headroom for cleans to be heard over drums bass and another guitar. the orange has surprising headroom too but you might want an eq pedal cos there is no eq for the clean channell on that amp. as for the AC 30 well if you dont know id say go check one out you'll be blown away.

these amps are over your budget tho so i'd get saving.

If you looked around, you might find a Peavey Classic 30 for $400 used. Excellent amps.

Hi Vanilla, a Super 60 might be a good choice. Built between '88 & '92. Played the 112 combo with an extension 112 cab in a band for maybe a year and it can do clean big time. There's also a 4X10 Super , circa'93-'94. The Concert series of amps, designed by Paul Rivera (starting in '93 ), could also be a good choice. Hope this helps some. ART
